Get that bluddy wall back in place, ol' mate. Hadrian might be dead and buried, but his monument can live on. Smile

I watched The Damned United when it was on telly a year or two ago and liked it, and i think it's also on youtube. Clough was portrayed okay as far as I could tell, so I don't know why Lorimer didn't like it.
One thing puzzled me though- During one important game (i forget at which club), Clough spent the entire 90 minutes in a back office at the ground with no view of the match, instead of going and sitting in the dugout!
Incidentally the rel-life Clough made two mistakes in my opinion- firstly he should have been more diplomatic and learned to get along with directors instead of getting their backs up.
Secondly he should never have left Brighton to go to Leeds because the whole of the city of Leeds (and the players) hated his guts because he'd insulted them in the past. Taylor had good the sense to stay at Brighton.

What have you got against the Bible izzy? You self-evidently haven't bothered reading it.

@spendius,
It's hardly chock full of historical accuracy.

Jesus played a blinder!-
"on the third day I will reach my goal" (Luke 13:32)

But others didn't get a result-
Paul said- "the people of Israel have not attained their goal" (Rom 9:31)

@Romeo Fabulini,

That depends on how you read it and what history is involved. A culture has a long gestation. The cultures on the Euphrates and the Nile did not spring fully formed into life as if by magic.

Has anyone else been watching the German TV series "Our Mothers, Our Fathers" running on the Beeb at the moment?
Very gripping, very harrowing.

I saw the last episode today. A very well-made series, in my opinion.
Very hard to watch.
Highly acclaimed in Germany, I believe. Good drama, very believeable.
I didn't advise my wife to watch it.

Do you not know Mac that ladies no longer wish to be thought of as delicate and sensitive creatures. They think it patronising.

@Walter Hinteler,

Interesting piece, most of which I agree with. but not this:
"That is a huge achievement. Generation War didn't ask us to hug a Nazi. It just asked us to imagine what it felt like to be one."
I don't think it did that. But I thought it captured (what I imagine to be) the spirit of the age very well.

@McTag,
The most critics after it was aired in Germany came from the Poland.
And from historians.

I don't think that it was an academic documentary, but - as you said - expressed the feelings of a certain age group.

@Romeo Fabulini,

Yes, British film and animation technicians are highly thought of.

My cousin's son (not English, he's from Dundee) works for them.

I watched The Damned United on telly again the other night but I'm not sure if I buy the scene where Clough allegedly sent in a letter of resignation to the Derby board.
Firstly, he put Taylor's name on it too, even though Taylor had told him he didn't want to resign, so I can't believe Taylor let the letter go in without telling the board "Clough had no right to put my name on it, I'm not resigning"
Secondly I can't figger out why Clough sent in his resignation in the first place unless it was some sort of bluff.
Surely he should have known that the board under Sam Longson had been wanting to get rid of him and would jump at the chance of accepting his resignation!
