Not sure I understand what you're trying to say mate?
Britain is in a bit of a mess (to put it mildly) thanks to a succession of incompetent Lab/Lib/Tory governments over the past 50 years, so wouldn't people be fools to go on voting for them?

I've read today that Eric Pickles, Communities Secretary, said: "I think if you're going to stay and live somewhere, it is beholden on you to learn the language."

That will leave vast regions of Spain, Portugal, France ... deserted. Sad

@Walter Hinteler,

Good point, well made.
However I have sympathy with Mr Pickles' point of view.

And that is developing. One of the tabloids reported (sorry I haven't got the source, saw it on telly) "no English language, no benefits claims".

We cannot hope to foster a cohesive society unless we all speak the same language.

That might be correct.

You do know, by the way, that "Kindergeld" (children's benefit) in Germany is higher than in the UK? If a spouse of someone serving with the British Army has a job in Germany, they get both benefits.

There are five Designated German Provider (DGP) hospitals s which provide hospital care for military families in Germany (and have all English speaking personals) besides normal German hospitals and doctors ... and the "Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust (Germany)" acts like any normal German health insurance company ...

That's clear, otherwise you wouldn't have ended a statement with a question mark.

@spendius,

I thought it was bad when Manchester City Council opened a Chinese section in the public library. Even if it was funded by the Chinese community.

I thought, "WTF?"

And as for translation services in town halls and hospitals...I'd do away with them.
We should not encourage ghettos to develop.

@McTag,
I don't bother with any of that stuff Mac.

It is all a result of in-fighting between various sub-sections of those bureaucracies which have charge of spending and which are also fighting each other.

With the higher-ups its about votes and in the undergrowth it's about making waves, reserved parking spaces, office equipment, washroom facilities, dining rooms, entitlements and sheer bloody-mindedness.

The largest and most common ghettos are where the lower-middle-classes concentrate. Or coagulate. Those are designed to surround the more exotic ghettos in case of trouble.

@McTag,
From the Independent
Quote:
If you’re the sort of person who doesn’t like your kids mixing with problem families, the type who are always getting arrested, you wouldn’t want them going near Tony Blair, would you? Five times now he’s been the subject of a citizen’s arrest. This fits with what the police often say, that the vast majority of crimes are committed by a handful of troublemakers, offending over and over again.

@Walter Hinteler,

"troublemakers"? "offending"? hardly

I liked it when Blair arranged to attend a book-signing in central London, and had to cancel because some of the citizenry might have kicked off.
I guarantee if he comes to Manchester, I'll punch him in the kisser.

@McTag,

Super Blues!

Shame about Aguero's hamstring though. Still, we should have enough for Chelsea.

Where's Steve when you need him?

Should the late Brian Clough have been made England manager?

@Walter Hinteler,
Pardon my ignorance and obtuseness, but are you referring to regional dialects, or to entirely foreign languages?

@InfraBlue,
Not speaking for Walt, but the Tories have spoken about getting rid of translation services, so only those who speak English have access to public services. It's a way of deflecting attention.

Seems a poor choice. He doesn't travel well.

@McTag,
Didn't you think it amusing Mac that Sienna Miller gave evidence under oath that her relationship with the guy who plays that well known heroic ladies man in the movies was but a "brief encounter". I bet even the judge sniggered.

It reminded me of Julie Burchill's "little local irritation" jest on a panel discussion in which her ex-husband was a participant.

Some of them are getting a bit uppity I fear.

I saw a female professor of something or other (not bad for her age) on Newsnight discussing a newly discovered fragment of a poem by Sappho very enthusiastically. Full of it one might forgiven for saying.
