@margo,

The Scottish weather is the main reason the Scots have traditionally gone forth to colonise the world, and incidentally to run the British Empire for the Sassenach.

Here's an odd thing (loosely connected to the above): If you look at the inscriptions on the Arc de Triomphe commemorating Napoleon's victories, and naming his generals etc, a lot of those have Scottish names.

@spendius,
On Mock The Week last night, Andy Parsons said 31% of Scots wanted independence compared to 41% of English, so Scotland would vote no to piss off the English.

@izzythepush,

Nigel Farage delivered an excellent speech yesterday and the meeja decided to ruin it by the way they reported a joke statement by an underling. Remarkable.

I felt a bit sorry for Nige.

@McTag,
I could never feel sorry for him. Did you see Channel 4 News on Thursday about his fascist/racist leanings when he was at school? He was sent out of class for racially abusing another boy and sang Hitler Youth songs on a weekend camp.

@izzythepush,

Many people change, and most people have done daft things when young.
I'm not sure about Nige himself, but most commentators seem to think UKIP is just NF-lite.

I thought his speech yesterday sounded about right. However all the reporting today concentrates on loonies in the party.
I think it will shake down, and UKIP will become the third largest party soon. Immigration is such a hot topic, coupled with unemployment and stagnation.

@McTag,
What nationality will you choose, Mac, in the event of a Yes vote? The question does not involve a No vote.

@spendius,

I doubt I would be given a choice. I have lived most of my life in the England part of Britain. I am a naturalised Englishman, and a native Scot. An enviable combination, you may agree.
I think I would vote NO, remain where I am, and nothing else needs to change, does it?

@McTag,

Correction: I think that people like me (expats) would not be given a vote. Otherwise the whole thing would be very unwieldy.

Votes will be restricted to those currently living in Scotland, despite a Labour MSP raising a debate saying this was "massively unfair". The SNP's Bruce Crawford, convener of the referendum bill committee, has said that working out entitlement for non-resident Scots would "add significant complexity" to the process. While there are 400,000 people living in Scotland who were born elsewhere in the UK, there are twice as many Scots living in England, Wales and Northern Ireland who won't be receiving ballot papers. Scotland has a population of 5 million, and including the wandering Scots would boost this by 16%.

@McTag,
It would signal the end of the SNP wouldn't it?

@spendius,

It would signal the beginning of a total Tory stranglehold in Westminster.

@McTag,

The government of Venezuela has apparently taken control of a toilet paper factory to combat national shortages of, and end damaging speculation in supplies of that commodity.

If they can't vote then they are not Scots now. If it is true that "working out entitlement for non-resident Scots would "add significant complexity" to the process" shouldn't they have thought about that before they embarked on the half-baked crusade.

If they vote Yes could they leave NATO and sign a mutual defence pact with another political entity? What would happen to MoD installations in Scotland?

That would quickly split into factions I should have thought.

Would HMQ have to give up Balmoral?

I wonder if Dylan will get a vote. He bought a spread up there a few years ago.

That's a good one. The future status of Faslane (The Holy Loch, nuclear submarine base) and Rosyth Dockyard, Fife (where our latest aircraft carrier is being assembled) is a really hot potato. The SNP says it wants at least the nuclear sub base gone.
Some English Tory twat has stated that Faslane would have to become Crown Property (rather like Gibraltar, I suppose) and that was a real gift to the SNP as you might imagine.

Alex S has been cosying up to the royal family, and has stated that Her Madge would still be welcome as monarch of an independent Scotland. Go figure. Maybe he's got his eye on a holiday cottage at Balmoral.

So Scots born in Scotland but living elsewhere would have no vote, but 400,000 foreigners would because they have chosen to live there.
This seems mad to me.

It looks like a stunt to me Mac. To keep AS in the limelight.
