@McTag,
Did you see the programme about violin collectors.
A modern concert violinists cannot afford to own the best violins, the Strads in particular. It seems the wood from Cremona only gives its best after 150 years. Everything else is deemed inferior. And the Strads have all been bought up.
So the concert violinist, at least for the big gigs, has to borrow a Strad from one of the collectors. They are From £10 Million. An owner of an engineering giant in Japan has a couple of dozen Strads and some of another make from the same period.
So to get into the Bigtime a violinist has to borrow his or her tools. Which, in effect, gives the collectors power over who gets in and who doesn't. The upcoming violinist has to persuade the collector and they were all mature gents.
So I suppose we will be seeing a lot of young lady violinists in the future. We were shown one very nice young lady making application to an American collector in what can only be described as a naff mansion. I dare speculate that she pulled it off.
It applies to other things. Amps for example. Microphones. But not involving millions as these violins do.
A bit like Old Trafford being loaned to the Rugby establishment.
