@McTag,
It's an attempt to turn back the clock, and divide the poor into deserving and undeserving. J. B. Priestley's An Inspector Calls sums it up quite well.

@McTag,

I count myself most fortunate to have lived all of my life within a welfare state. It is fast being dismantled now.

Short of a catastrophe I can't see it being dismantled. It is too embedded in the economy and the nation's psyche.

But this Bedroom Tax just looks to be ridiculous. It seems to me to be a knee-jerk by a certain type of Tory in a direction that is so pointless that it can only be a gesture.

Maybe it is intended to rid London of poor people. Vote rigging maybe.

Super day, watching super Scot Andy Murray wring out a victory in the tennis final.
A very hot day's work.
Alex Salmond was there I see, waving his saltire.

How hot was it?

Officially, the temperature was nice 28°C at the time of the play - newspaper wrote, it was "up to 40°C courtside".

@Walter Hinteler,
From the Independent
Quote:
The heatwave has been responsible for as many as 760 deaths, according to official calculations, as the UK enters the sixth day of plus-30C temperatures.

The temperature today is forecast to hit 31.0C, following yesterday’s year-high of 31.9C at Heathrow, marking the longest heatwave for seven years.

This year, we had until now at our place 10 days above 30°C; last year, it were 14 days; in 2011 it had been 17 days; in 2010 ... 42 days.
We are situated at a latitude about the same as in Oxford ...

@Walter Hinteler,

That's hot.

Strange, I have been expecting to get drought warnings from the water companies before now but so far, none.

@McTag,
The BBC were warning the South-East to be 'water-aware' - we'll probably get the drought warnings next week!

@Walter Hinteler,

Yes, the man was revered in the blue half of Manchester.

Another hot day here. We're going up to Buxton on the train to hear a Crosby, Stills and Nash tribute band.
Freeman Hardy Willis or something.
Pearl, Dean and Younger.

Greig, McKinnon, Baxter.

Perhaps your batsmen can save your face tomorrow. 600 on a dusty, well spiked wicket should be easy with two days to go.

What about Aston Agar eh? All time records.

It strikes me that records should start again from when DRS started.

I see that American news networks have cancelled all staff leave because of the imminent arrival of Will and Kate's baby.

What?

George Washington, thou shouldest be living at this hour.

@McTag,
I'm bored with royal baby news - be glad when the royal foal is dropped. I bet Kate will too, especially in this heat! And then the poor old Queen can go on her hols - bless her, she deserves them, been quite a year for her - Philip too.

@vonny,
They were talking about baby names on Mock the Week. I think if it's a boy they should call him Kong. Then when he becomes king, look out.
