No I've not seen it, being an Observer man, but I was interested in the TV programme last week which said that increased CO2 was a result of warming, not the cause of it.
Anyway there's a whole nother thread for that, of course.

House of Lords.

What opinion does the common man have on the proposed changes.

Well, the changes are yet to be proposed. I mean, some options are still open, although Jack Straw has said the "no change" is not an option.

The Commons have voted that the second chamber be all-elected, and if I heard the news correctly this evening, their lordships have rejected that.

My opinion, and I'm more than common, is that the hereditary element should be phased out and the second chamber should be appointed.

Ah, the devil's in the detail as usual.

An all-party standing committee probably.

We forgot to mention the Lords Spiritual. What shall we do with the bishops?

Cop out. You mean the Government don't you?

I've just seen Gordon Brown shouting at the camera about the evils of the Tories spending billions on weapons of mass destruction and there he was not many years later voting for New Labour to spend billions on weapons of mass destruction.

Good innit?

Bring back the Bishops.

The Upper House should be a proper senate, < senex, old man.
A random selection of pensioners should be appointed for 3 years at a time. You will get a slightly conservative but entirely representative selection of people - of course they could refuse to serve, so there would be some self-regulation. After all, we have all this unused talent and experience lying around, and they would be distinguished by not SEEKING power.

Well I know you are an old cynic, but are the present incumbents any better?

One would like to think that they are more a repository of wisdom than a randomly chosen bunch of pensioners.

Yes, one would. However, as they are either scions of ancient warfaring families or political appointees, can one be sure?

I have a sneaking admiration for toffs and grandees, despite my upbringing and common sense...they have an enviable sense of their own worth and infallibility....superiority? Well if they don't believe it, who will?

They have, in general, been far better educated and have few illusions such as "Education, education, education."

Oh, I'm here alright...

I have been away because I was moving house, I also have no internet connection and this is my first day back at work.

You all know me, some of you know me personally. I knew that 'poem' would elicit gossip, and I must admit I was quite surprised at how discrete you all were (especially you, spends).

Shall I return with a pile of stones for you to lob at me?

I am trying to be discrete myself here (for the sake of another member) but you are all mature* people and you should know that situations are seldom as they seem.

So what did happen between Ellpus and Smorgs? Why has everthing gonre so quiet???

I asked for the poem to be removed as it was causing harm, and it was an attack (without evidence) on myself and another member. I did not ask for the thread to be locked.

You should not be so quick to judge others (lest ye be).

A senate composed of elected but senior (over 65?) persons. ????

Elections at state and national level tend to be popularity contests rather than the best minds.

Is the House of Lords the rubber stamp that Australias senate is? Do they actually perform a real function?
