@McTag,
It amazes me Mac that mature men of intelligence and experience seem to be totally oblivious of the task the clergy has on its hands and how difficult it is to accomplish in view of the fact that it runs contrary to the exigencies of life. It is almost as difficult as countermanding the laws of science.
There are those, I will admit, who think that the performance of the task is un-necessary but I do believe that such people would not be the sort you might invite to your house for dinner.
Another thing that amazes me is that those who are oblivious to the task of the clergy have so little regard for the people of the past whose obvious felt need for the task to be attempted at all they put down to ignorance and superstition as if they have had some sudden brilliant insight not given to our forbears who created the culture of which they are the fortunate beneficiaries.
Of course, such a cavalier and self-indulgent attitude is affordable because these things work out their destiny very slowly and any serious failure to accomplish the task, or to even hold the line, will not affect them in their lifetime all that much. Thus they can have the benefits of the clergy's work and at the same time belittle and snigger at it with all sorts of highly original witticisms which serve the purpose of exposing their disregard for the welfare of future generations.
It is very similar with their attitude to credit and to the status of the environment.
