I don't know what to asy about Red Riding (Channel 4 last night). No doubt it will become a cult, but to me it seemed like violence and soft porn masquerading as ground-breaking drama, and obscurity and mumbled speech as mystery.

I will say, the jury is out. Oi'll give it four. Out of ten.

@McTag,

But the TV guy in The Guardian thought it was wonderful. So what do I know?

fantastic, I taped it, but not sure if I can get it to replay.

Cycled for lunch at Thaxted today. Via Much Hadham Stocking Pelham Rickling Green Quendon Widdington Debden and back via Dunmow High Easter and Matching Green.

Interesting tablet attached to what looked like a water culvert near Gt Dunmow. In memoriam to Thomas Bowyer, weaver of Dunmow, burned at the stake for his Protestant faith 1556.

And I just thought his ideas about the un-knowable conflicted with more powerful peoples' ideas about the un-knowable, so they burned him alive, aged 39. That's religion for you.

@Steve 41oo,
THE FLITCH OATH

YOU DO SWEAR BY CUSTOM OF CONFESSION

THAT YOU NE'ER MADE NUPTUAL TRANSGRESSION

NOR SINCE YOU WERE MARRIED MAN AND WIFE

BY HOUSEHOLD BRAWLS OR CONTENTIOUS STRIFE

OR OTHERWISE IN BED OR AT BOARD

OFFENDED EACH OTHER IN DEED OR IN WORD

OR IN A TWELVE MONTHS TIME AND A DAY

REPENTED NOT IN THOUGHT IN ANY WAY

OR SINCE THE CHURCH CLERK SAID AMEN

WISH'T YOURSELVES UNMARRIED AGAIN

BUT CONTINUE TRUE AND DESIRE

AS WHEN YOU JOINED HANDS IN HOLY QUIRE.

It wouldn't have been his ideas Steve. It would be his insistence in preaching them, possibly after a few warnings. I think you're oversimplifying a trifle. All ruling hierarchies do that sort of thing. The Soviets did it and they had no religion. Many others too. The scientific industrialists victimised the Tolpuddle Martyrs and the Luddites.

It's a power/vested interest thing. Nothing to do with religion.

Come on spends, if religion doesn't bestow power and bequeath vested interest I'd like to know what does.

@Steve 41oo,
Exactly my sentiments. Religion is about power and control, and the interests of the clergy and the ruling classes were traditionally served through it and by means of it.

Monopoly of firearms. Control of information. The two combined.

@spendius,
Well I was going to say something insightful about Spendy being a closet materialist/marxist and how utterly wise and generally a great fellow McT is for agreeing with me, but all I can say is I did 57 miles to Royston today and have a sore bum.

@McTag,

Interestingly (to me) in one of the recent TV programmes about Islam, it was stated by muslim contributors that there were no real problems within, and no terrorism by, muslim states until there grew up a "professional" clergy. Before that time muslim leaders and mullahs all had a day job, as well as their duties in the mosque.
After that, fundamentalism and polarisation.

Went to see Watchmen after work last night.

Very strange film, but I enjoyed it. Quite telling I was the only female there...

@smorgs,

this guy liked the book better.

"Director Zack Snyder (Dawn of the Dead) has stuck slavishly to the highly stylised look of the graphic novel, which seems to have served as the film's storyboard, although there are changes to the plot which will irritate fans.

It's a very slick looking film, with good quality CG effects for the most part. However, it lacks heart or any emotional depth. While almost every superhero character seems to have a fatal flaw, sociopathic tendencies or a psychopathic mission, we don't care about any of them.

For a world chock full of people in silly costumes, it all takes itself so deadly serious. A few jokes and a coherent storyline wouldn't have hurt."
