@Steve 41oo,
What pitiful masochism. You should be wearing hair shirts and eschewing a saddle. You're at Conference level Steve.

Where's the bed of nails for afters?

@spendius,
you are right. all i can say is it wasnt supposed to be an exercise in masochism, it just turned out that way.

Which is more than can be said for the Spurs fans who went all the way to Old Trafford to see them go one nil up only to settle for a loss when Utd scored twice before half time.

Well, yes, we're all conscripted in one way or another.
I couldn't imagine you joining up through choice.

@The Pentacle Queen,
Oh, and from your definition you make it sound like I don't do any work, spendius. Wink

I was only referring to the Arts Council Money-Go-Round Queenie.

From what you have told us I am quite satisfied that you have more than over-filled your quota at the most important task of bringing solace and comfort to the lads on the coal face and deserve a vote of thanks.

we should all be engaged in public works of this kind. The world economy has fallen of a cliff and its only people like Queenie here who are doing anything useful.

In the interests of improved strength and fitness, I've recently started doing chin-ups on a bar I have put up in the garage, which is quite good, but it makes me a bit dizzy so I suppose is putting my blood pressure up. Is is that too dangerous for a bloke my age? Or should I soldier on, no pain no gain?

If you can ignore the bar/dizzy temptation in the foregoing, I would be grateful btw.

Keep your BP checked McT, Exercise will raise it so you should start on a less explosive regimen, (Like walking into jogging and then weight training for long muscles and tensors). Always keep your aspirin regimen up.

@McTag,
First of all Mac--what has prompted you to take such extreme measures?

Speaking about service.
According to the BBC (and others)
a "Teesside pub chain has announced plans to sell beer for 1p a pint.
Stockton-based Dukedom Group plans to sell cut-price pints to customers at six of its 34 outlets, if they buy a glass of spirit as well. ... The six pubs involved are in Stockton, Redcar, the Wirral, Hull, Barnsley and Nelson in Lancashire." ... Operations manager Russell Vickers said the promotion was designed to help people through the credit crunch. ... "

Well I'm impressed. Not the Blossoms? But I think perhaps a little more gentle exercise would be beneficial to start with. Not wishing to appear condescending or patronising...wouldn't want to risk a muckty chin-up. Smile And I've just found out (only because I've been too lazy to do the research) that excessive bicycling can be bad for the prostate. As I am only prostrate after I fall off, its of no concern to me.

It's just that my son, when he was here for a couple of months recently, asked me to put up a bar where he could do chin-ups. Which I duly did. Then I just thought I would have a go myself. I was surprised at how unfit I was, so I've been improving that a little.

Not entirely true. Exercise significantly lowers blood pressure for several hours afterwards - a relaxation of the arteries & veins is a normal part of the physiological response to sustained exertion. More importantly, regular aerobic exercise keeps the average BP down. There are transient peaks during activity, but getting into it all gradually and working up to higher levels, as you suggested, moderates that aspect.

Then, of course there is the endorphin rush that follows a good workout. I've been a lifelong exercise nut and learned long ago that, while it didn't solve any of my problems, for several hours after a good workout I didn't give a damn about them.

We've heard that you were one time very successful - versus this nice and polite English woman, who just wanted to please her host ...
