A light plane crashes by the railway in Stafford, so the entire West Coast Main Line (recently renovated at a cost of goodness knows how many millions) is closed for three days so that "air crash investigators can do their work"

What's that all about? The railway system is shut down on a very important weekend and thousands of travellers have their plans wrecked and for what?

It wouldn't happen in China.

@McTag,
I saw the news and have seen that the overhead lines were destroyed.

Maybe that explains the delay..

While I understand that it takes some time to investigate and do the repairs .... closing down railway lines (and tubes and buses) over Christmas (and Easter) seems to be .... well, no other country does such: those are the most busiest days (at least here in Germany) for the railway, on long distance.

@Francis,

From the BBC website:

"All rail services on the West Coast Mainline between Rugby and Stafford remained suspended.
A Network Rail spokesman said engineers had been unable to get onto the site because of the investigation, but were hoping to start work on Saturday afternoon.
"It's probably about a day's work and we hope to finish by Sunday evening. It should be clear for Monday morning commuters," he said."

So the engineers couldn't get on with the repairs until the crash investigators cleared off the site.
That to me seems a disproportionate state of affairs in the circumstances.

My grandfather came from Devon.

If he had not gotten into a fight with his 12 year old son
(my uncle) about English table manners in 1910,
I 'd be an Englishman instead of an American.

David, you are well mad. You'll like it here, with Spendy.

That post of mine was from March 2007, I see. Better late than never, but better never late.

@Izzie,
Gee- there was one of those ladies in the pub tonight who enjoyed us old codgers enjoying her from a distance.

Most take the 'ump if we show any signs of that.

Which is, bearing in mind their attire, ridiculous.

@OmSigDAVID,
Yeah but to do so it's only necessary to type in some different co-ordinates isn't it?

You're being a bit pedantic there Dave. Sentimental even.

What are "one of those ladies" Spendi? What kind of attire?

David...
Not sure about Strawberry shortcake - but Devon Clotted Cream Fudge is lovely. Of course, the Cream Tea with scones, clotted cream and strawberry jam is rather delicious too.
