Memory Issues

I just want to start by asking how I can have just got rid of a number of huge programs from my computer, and have LESS memory than I did before I started?

(And yes, I have cleaned up after them and had the computer off.)

There were 11 Microsoft Updates at around the same time, but surely they can't have been THAT huge?

OK....I am running currently at 62% to 59% free space on my hard disk.

Could that level of memory full upness be causing frequent freezing and suchlike of the computer?

With ~60% free space on your hard drive, there shouldn't be any problems (i.e. not enough space for the swap file) related to that issue.

I had had the same on my computer with those updates - though 280 GB free space on it.

Just boot it up again.

(Just checking this thread because I was concerned by the title. Ah, I see what you're talking about now! I thought Deb was rather young to be suffering senior moments! Laughing )

OK, please continue now with your technical stuff!

1. Empty the Recycle Bin

2. Don't say "memory" when you mean "disk space".

1. Have, of course......doh.

2. Don't be a rude bastard. If you want to say something, you can say it reasonably.

And to whoever said reboot...of course I have rebooted.

Wakter...so you think it might be the Windows updates?

So...the sticking and all is likely something else?

Hmmmm....my downloaded Luxor game always seems corrupted, and things seem to run better without it....(I have dowmnloaded it a few times in hopes it will improve). I got rid of it again a couple of days ago, and things seem less "sticky".

ooks like I have to give up on it, or get another source.

I'm not sure what Wakter means (though on my keyboard the 'k' is just aside the 'l' - but frequent typos are MY copyright!!!) but with me and my computer it seemed to be Window-update related - worked fine with Mrs. Walter's computer.

Dlowan,

Contrex was trying to be helpful, you may have overreacted a wee bit.

He was just pointing out that the word "memory' is commonly used to mean the RAM. I think all of us misinterpreted your question at first until we had to read on to figure out what you were talking about.

You are really complaining about the space on your hard drive.

Using the correct terms will make your questions much more clear. Your use of the term "bastard' to someone who was trying to help (albeit in a terse manner) was probably a poor word choice.

Memory can also refer to RAM.

Deb, by Windows updates, do you mean upgrading to Vista? If so, I was listening to a 'tech talk' show on NPR and they were talking about performance problems after upgrading to Vista and indicated that you need at least 2gb of RAM to operate programs such as MS Office (Word, etc) on the Vista OS.

How much RAM do you have?

Here, with me, it were the usual Window security updates (2047 MB RAM).

  1. What operating system?

  2. What browser(s)?

  3. What email client(s)?

  4. What chat/messaging client(s)?

  5. How much RAM installed, and what type is it?

  6. What type and speed is your processor?

  7. Other than Microsoft updates, any programs installed or uninstalled around the time the problem started?

  8. Have you checked @ Microsoft Updates to make sure you're current there (no failed or missing updates)?

  9. Any hardware changes recently?

  10. Have you cleared your caches and temporary files recently?

  11. Have you defragmented your hard drive recently?

  12. Does the "freezing" happen only while online, or does it happen while doing offline tasks as well?

I may have indeed.

However, helpfulness is better delivered without such arrogance etc., which is likely to make it perceived as most UNhelpful by the "helpee", and Contrex is likely to find that an almost universal truth.

I am happy to be taught about a mistake, but not in that manner.

And bastard is almost a term of endearment here.
