Windows users are/will be slowly forced into switching from XP to Vista.

This change will come about primarily due to 2 forces:

a) DX10 only available for Vista, and we will see more and more games and graphics applications that run only on DX10

b) 64-bit. As we slowly move to 64 bit it will make more sense to choose Vista than XP because drivers manufacturers will be thinking towards Vista in the future.

As a side effect, note that Vista will also speedup the switch from 32-bit to 64-bit, because it requires 1 GB of memory. This reduces the maximum addressable memory space that can be used by non-operation system applications from 2 GIG to 1 GIG (some users will be able to leverage another 1 GB from the 3GB switch).

However, at this point in time 2 GB is a minimum application requirement for many people, and 4 GB is more desirable -- which means that they will have to go to 64 bit.

As we all are forced to consider making the switch I'm sure many people would like to be aware of the possible problems and incompatibilities they may face. Aside from learning a new interface, common problems will be:

1) Imperfect backwards compatability with WinXP software
2) Lack of drivers
3) Loss of performance, privacy, control, or usability

AN OPEN LETTER TO BILL GATES, FROM SOMEONE AT THE BBC........

Dear Bill Gates

Give me back my weekend. I bought a new Windows Vista laptop - and that's when the trouble began.

My dislike of your new user interface you can put down to the conservatism that comes with advancing years. However having loyally stuck by the galumphing, unaesthetic functionality of your operating systems over the past 15 years, while faced with ridicule from pretentious Mac-loving types, I resent your attempt at an elegance transplant.

But what really grates is that your system is incompatible with two of the vital tools of my trade...................The rest of the letter.........

Yer lordship-

Methinks that Microsoft may have bitten off more than they could chew. From what I have been reading, apparently it is not a very good deal to switch an XP computer to Vista. As in the letter, too many glitches. In addition, Windows has extended its free support for Home Edition XP users.

Quote:
In a move sure to bring joy to the hearts of many consumers, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) yesterday announced that it is extending the availability of support for users of Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Media Center Edition by an additional five years over what it had previously announced.

Since the unveiling of Windows Vista, the latest iteration of the company's operating system that is due to roll out to consumers on Jan. 30, Microsoft had originally planned to support consumer users of Windows XP only through April 2009, as detailed in the Microsoft Support Lifecycle Policy. On Wednesday, however, the Redmond, Wash.-based company accorded consumer users the same level of support as it gives its business users, carrying the support through to 2014.

I think that gives XP users, who are happy with their operating systems, another reason to keep their computers as they are. As far as I am concerned, I intend to keep this setup until it dies on me.

I quite agree, Phoenix.

Personally, I like XP, and the last thing I want to do is to muck about with all this stuff, as I know very little about PCs.

LE- I am "intermediately good" (is that a proper expression? Laughing ) with computers, and I futz around with mine a bit. I am not a gamer, and I don't care for the fancy interface. As I have mentioned before, the first thing that I did when I got XP (and also when I recently had to change my hard drive) was to change the "look" to "classic" (translation, Windows 98)

So, all in all, I see no advantage with Vista for me.

My dealer just gave me the link for the free [actually not totally free: I have to pay for postage and package] update to "Vista Home Premium" .... but only after I promised solemnly not to install it until the release of the first service pack.

It's new, what do you expect? Most all new crap has bugs and lots of problems.

Which is why I am not switching for a while.
