three guys are staying at a hotel which costs 30 dollars. they each pay ten dollars and go up to the room. after they leave, the guy at the counter realized he overcharged, the room is only 25$. the guy sends a worker up with five one-dollar bills to give to the men. since 5$ cant be split evenly to 3 men, he gives one dollar back to each of them, and keeps the last two for himself. if each man only ended up paying nine dollars (9 x 3= 27) and the worker has the other 2$ (27+2=29), how can that possibly add up to thirty? where did that dollar get lost? its supposed to add up to 30.....help me!!

It's not supposed to add up to $30. Each man paid $9, which adds up to $27. The hotel got $25 and the worker got $2, which adds up to the same amount.

It's the same result as if each man had paid $9 originally, giving the hotel $27, and the worker had stolen $2.

The men initially paid $10 ea; $30.

The refund was $5.00, which was split $2 to the bellhop, $1 ea to the 3 men; $5.00.

The hotel got $25, the bellhop got $2, each of the 3 men got back $1 apiece (making the cost of the room $9.00 ea - $27.00); the original $30.00 is accounted for.

Code:Hotel: $25.00
Bellhop: 2.00
Customer 1: 1.00
Customer 2: 1.00
Customer 3: 1.00
_____
Total: $30.00

In total agreement even though you do not need it timberlandko. My own brother tried pulling that one on me about 6 years ago. I really had to think about it because it does seem deceiving. I like the way you spelled the answer out so it makes total sense.

Here are the links to the same riddle.
