Its best to do a full clean install of a new operating system - back up to removeable media anything you wish to keep, then begin your installation proceedure with the appropriate set of

WIN XP Setup Disks

for the XP version you wish to install. Note: 6 floppies will be required, or a bootable optical disk, and you MUST use the correct setup disk version for your installation; XP home or Pro, No Service Pack, Service Pack 1, or Service Pack 2.

Nothing at all to do with there being anything wrong with your install CDs - the best way to install an operating system is to do a full install onto a clean, formatted hard drive. The floppies do not install the operating sysystem, they just get the machine properly set up and ready for the operating stystem to be installed using the install CD. While Win2K can be installed that way via the standard Win9x single setup floppy, XP can't, it requires the 6-floppy method. Among other things, the floppies will install files necessary to effect a valid WinXP install and remove files which can inhibit or prevent a valid XP install.

But whatever - have it your way.
