I noticed today that on my bottom toolbar where all my active page icons that there is now the stop icon there. When I left click it ,it says my computer is infected. What does this mean exactly? I`m pretty sure that it`s not good. I tried to remove it with no luck. Also a white square has popped up on my desk top.I also tried to remove that with no luck. So I`m assuming that their both connected somehow. The computer acts the same.Does this mean someones hacked into my computer or it has virus? What can I do to fix this?
Thanx hailbrainiac

Tried scanning computer for infected files.
Even though I scanned my computer with XoftSpy & PC-cillin my computer reads that it is infected even though these programmes indicate that no viruses had been detected.I`m very new to computers so my knowledge of them is small. Is there a free downloadable program that could clear this problem up?
Thanx

Follow all the instructions in the link jespah posted above. this will ensure your computer is not infected.

It can be consuming process but well worth it if you are new and unfamiliar with computers.

Read the information carefully, print it out if possible and follow the instructions. then report back to this thread. bookmark this thread in your bookmarks.

I have not used pc-cillin for viruses nor XoftSpy for spying.

On my two Win 98SE machines I have had great success with Avast! for viruses and a combination of Spybot and Adaware for spying. On my two Win XP machines I have had great success with Avast! for viruses and Windows Defender for spying.

I'm not running any ME machines at this time, sad to say.

TrendMicro's pc-cillin is fine - well regarded, reliable, adequatly effective - as long as its properly configured and kept updated per its own very clear instructions and tutorials.

ParetoLogic's XSoftSpy is barely a notch above junk; it is heavilly marketed through commission-earning affilliates and phony "Review" websites, it is known for false positives and for indifferent detection and removal capabilities when it comes to dealing with actual known nasties, even very common ones. To be fair, over the last year, largely in response to user complaints and bad press from the active yuckware removal community, ParetoLogic has cleaned up their act some regarding seedy affilliates, and the latest version (7.0) is better than its predecessors, but still doesn't make the cut.

Download HiJackThis, and extract it to a folder of its own either in your Programs file or directly on your root drive. If you have already installed HiJackThis, be certain its in its own folder and not a temporary or desktop folder (to place HJT in its own folder, open Windows Explorer - Windows key + E - locate and select your root drive, the drive on which Windows is installed, and open that folder, right-clicking anywhere in that folder's blank space, select "New">"Folder", name the new folder "HJT", then download and extract, or if you already have the latest version somewhere else move, HJT into that folder). Launch the application, then, from its splash screen, choose "Miscellaneous Tools", or from the main start page, select "Config", then select "Search for updates online", confirm, and be sure your's is the latest version. When you are sure HJT is properly located and updated, close it, then re-open it. When running HiJackThis to scan or fix things, run it from its own folder, WITH NO OTHER BROWSERS, WINDOWS, FILESHARING, EMAIL, OR MESSAGING APPLICATIONS OPEN OR RUNNING. Select "Do A System Scan and Save a Logfile". When the scan has completed, copy-and-paste the entire logfile to this thread. Do not "FIX" anything yet.
