The way of thinking

Guten Tag,

Hey there, I was just thinking to myself the process I use for writing a story. Let me lay down some background first...

Been writing casually for about two years. The always common problem of "needing to write more" was always on my mind. Back then, I used to combat this problem one way.

Basically, physically sitting myself down for two and a half hours and writing what popped into my head on the spot! Obviously, my stories didn't always flow so well or sound that great even. But, I got writing done and I guess that filled some need I desired.

Looking back, I see a trend. All of the story ideas or beginning themes started out fantastic and were made of the innovative stuff you've never heard off. Well, that usually didn't last more than five pages and then the "meat" of the story sounded rather boring and repetitive. Usually I would add certain key events to keep up your attention, but still honestly put, I wasn't very proud of the whole thing.

Now, I write different. With my current story, I have used an opposite method and planned out most of the story before even attempting to put it into words. The ideas seem more pleasing and the plot appears more fluid and rich. Although, all that came with a steep price. I just don't write that much anymore, all this planning and making sure things sound right physically keeps me away from writing down words. Ideas are always in my mind, but the want to write kinda left.

I still like writing in a way as I used too. Basically not having an idea of events, only very very major ones in my mind, and just writing the "in-between" on the spot. I like writing like that, because it keeps me interested not knowing what is going to happen. (hope that makes sense).

So what should I do? Plan things out so overall it sounds better, most likely flows better or write just on the spot.

Better sounding and flow = less interest, much less writing

Writing on the spot = work actually gets done, but quality downgrades

Real sorry for the length, didn't think I would talk this much. Appreciate your thoughts, auf wiedersehen.

Hey Acepilot- I've been told by people whose writing I really admire, that they write everyday, sort of like an exercise. You know how if you lift weights everyday, you get stronger and stronger? I guess it's the same theory.

I know when I am in the habit of writing, everything I see or hear seems like inspiration for a poem or story. When I get out of the habit, I don't seem to catch those little bits of inspiration in the same way, if at all- although I'm looking at and listening to the same things. So I can definitely see the benefit of keeping yourself in the writing mindset or mode in terms of output.

The problem I have with writing everyday, is that with volume comes boredom-everything I write starts sounding the same to me. I find myself using the same words, images, phrasing over and over again. Some of this is just a matter of taste - I really like the sound of the word "blue" (though it's not my favorite color) and the feeling it connotes, so I've noticed that it's the rare poem I write that doesn't have the word "blue" in it- although I also like the image of the sky and all that it connotes-so maybe that's why I use "blue" so much-I think I equate it with freedom - not patriotic freedom, but freedom of movement, nonconstriction, etc... but anyway - you get the picture.
So I find myself doing stuff like that and it seems too much of the same old- same old and I ask myself, "What's the point of writing the same poem over and over?" so I take a break- but then it's really hard to get started again.

(Should I apologize for the length of my post-even though I knew I would talk this much? Laughing)

I have a question for you though. Are long posts bad? Is there some kind of rule about that?

Nothing wrong with that. I'm just used to being in an environment where the more lengthy topics don't get looked at very much just for that reason.

We are getting kinda off topic, but anyways. It seems you have a very similar problem Surprised . Maybe we all have this issure and I'm just shooting out in the dark... Confused
