Thanks, osso. The info says that they are related to the US horned lizard (evolved separetely). I didn't know that, but I was planning to post of photo of a horned lizard (horny toad) along with the thorny devil. Couldn't find a picture I liked. What the hell. Here's a photo of a horned lizard:

Thorny devils are obligate ant specialists, eating virtually nothing else.

Hopefully you are having better dinners for yourself than that Wink

Give it some. How much could it eat?

And what Rosborne said. They eat ants. Lots and lots of ants. Saw one of these guys in a nature show. It's what inspired the photo. They eat LOTS of ants--fast.

Hmmm, maybe good for fire ants...

I don't have ants in my house, so far, so good, but Dys and Diane get sugar ants sometimes, and BBB had a recent to-do with fire ants in her house.

Too bad they don't like cockroaches...

here are ebeth's "thorny devils" Shocked
we all went for a walk in a park by lake ontario on monday (canadian thanksgiving) and they were quite well-behaved .
they just have to be fed from time-to-time and they are quite peaceful and loving - but don't try to take their food away !!!

Well, that's the conundrum, eh?

Animals in the wild are not to be looked at as pets (whatever I murmur fondly), and I understand that. I even understand it re our pets, re not making them eternally cute children.

Thanks, hamburger, for Beth's thorny devils. I'm guessing that they eat more than ants.

Rosborne, Thanks for the picture of Dakota. What a beauty.

hamburger, Thanks for the octopus info. Octopi are amazing animals. Far more intelligent that we'd expect--and extraordinary to look at. BTW, didn't know about the three hearts. Live and loin.

some years ago when we visited the NASSAU AQUARIUM we found a rather interesting and smart animal : MANTA RAYS !

http://www.bootkeyharbor.com/images/MantaRay.gif

as soon as they noticed visitors approaching their open basin , they managed to cling to the side of the basin and started slapping their tails against it , making quite a racket .
we wondered what this was all about - the smart beggars were BEGGING TO BE FED !
they certainly are not the most beautiful fish , but certainly know how to get attention .

hamburger, I love to see manta rays (and other rays) fly through the water. Graceful and beautiful.
