Tapir baby with its mother at Longleat Safari Park. Every tapir baby has a different pattern of strips and spots for camouflage.

Allan Gordon a stock man at Killochries Fold uses water from a hosepipe to help two-year-old Highland Heffer Princess of Killochries cool down on May 22, 2012 in Kilmacolm, Scotland. The first glimpse of summer has arrived in Scotland as temperatures are expected to remain high through the weekend.

Captain Owen Beynon Brown from the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery holds his dog Lord Percy, a resident at the barracks up for Tango his horse to greet, at Wellington Barracks in London, Thursday, April 19, 2012. The King’s Troop on Thursday were preparing for an inspection in Hyde Park, in preparation for 2012 ceremonial roles in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, Trooping the Colour and London 2012 Olympics.

@Barry The Mod,
osso, Great pic. Thanks.

Barry, Lord Percy is a keeper. Not all that lordly, but he's young.

@Roberta,
That's a strong mountain lion photo, Roberta. That's what we called them in LA.

@ossobuco,
Here too. Mountain lion, puma, cougar all work in one place or another. In the Everglades they are called panthers or Florida panthers and become endangered species. Same critter, but. . . .

Did you know mountain lions are not "big cats"? Only lions, tigers and two other cats get the designation. They have the vocal apparatus needed to roar. All the others snarl, growl, cough, or maybe meow, but they can't roar, so they aren't 'big' regardless of size.

@roger,
I've never met one personally. That's probably good, but I'd like to have seen one from slightly afar without getting all scaredy.

I have a pretty good memory, knock on wood, but have some blank spots, like what to do if you find yourself close to a mountain lion or a rattlesnake. I've looked up the answers more than once, and that space in my brain is still blank.

@ossobuco,
JTT, Muchas gracias for the hummingbird pics. Exquisite little boids.

Osso, Glad you like the big PC pic. They are stunners, and I remember that Diane said she thinks they have the most beautiful of larger cat faces. What do you do if you encounter one? Don't turn your back and run. This applies to most four-legged predators. You trigger their run-after you response. Try to make yourself look big. Make noise. That's all I remember. A rattlesnake? Depends on how close you are. If you see one slithering across the road, don't do nuttin'. Just stay away. If you're within striking distance, don't move.

Rogie, bubbele, Florida panthers are not the same as mountain lions. It's a difference similar to that of Siberian tigers and Bengal tigers. Both striped PCs, but not the same. These days, you may be closer to right than you used to be. In order to keep the Florida panther from going extinct, scientists imported some of the western variety. So now they're a mix.

As for the big cat issue, you are right oh almost all-knowing donkey. The PCs considered to be big cats are lions, tigers, leopards, and jaguars. (Sometimes I scare myself. What is all this info doing in my failing brain? I need to make room for other stuff.)
