Who lives down in deepest darkest Africa?
whos the one one who brought the jungle fame?
who's the king of animals in Africa?
when we get in trouble or whe're in a fight,
Whos the one who just wont turn and run?
who believes in doing good and doing right?

@tsarstepan,

MsOlga? We have to find ways of allowing larger populations of wildlife to adapt in our cities and suburban sprawl and not evict them en masses like how cities like NYC deal with Canadian geese and even coyotes.

I hope that is possible, tsar.
But I don't know that cars, concrete jungles & endless ongoing suburban sprawl are compatible with the needs of wildlife. It would take a very conscious & determined effort & proper planning.
Me, I think the answer is for humans to "downsize" their lifestyles & habits. There is only so much room, only so many resources on the planet & we are not the only ones whose needs should be taken into consideration.

@msolga,
I can't find the source but according to one expert in an interview on NPR late last year, he claimed that NYC had a greater level of wildlife diversity (in terms of numbers of species) then all of the US national parks combined.

Hi gang,

You've all been busy posting terrific pics. Not gonna discuss each one tonight. I'm lumping. Just going from memory.

dj, That bunny was almost unrecognizable.

Love the deer and the goose.

tsar, The statistic about the national parks sounds a bit out there to me. I know that New York has tremendously diverse fauna. But still. I know that in addition to your standard urban dwellers we've got coyotes and raccoons. And a good variety of raptors. Coyotes and raccoons are tremendously adaptable. Raptors have easy pickings here with all the oiban boids and rodents and lots of tall places for nesting.

Got curious as well and checked - the Earthwatch numbers include city zoos, flora in botanical gardens, and untold numbers of species of subway ratties:

High Seas, I expected the rat population. Not the zoo population. That's a whole other ball of wax. Including the zoos, I believe it. Especially now that all the cobras are back where they belong.

@Roberta,
They're counting everything alive - and including the entire metropolitan area within a 50-mile radius from NYC. National parks can't compete Smile

The Earthwatch project New York City Wildlife led by Dr Cat Burns of the University of Maine is carrying out one of the first studies aiming to understand the impacts of urbanisation across different taxonomic groups in the New York metropolitan area. The project will quantify the abundance and diversity of mammal, bird, amphibian and plant communities in a range of protected areas spanning an urbanisation gradient, from extremely urban to rural.

Here is a link to a live feed of a mother bald eagle and her babies. It'll play for a second then an ad and then more of the eagles. Oh, you might want to turn the sound down. The wind is horribly loud.
