Arella Mae, I forgot to mention that some baboon troops live in urban areas--in India, I believe. They break into apartments, raid street vendors, and steal from stores. They've got the whole human thing down.

Muskox and calf:

Arella Mae, Oops. Embarrassed I'm now having doubts that the monkeys I was thinking about are baboons.

They're not. They're langurs. Urban dwellers:

@tsarstepan,
I think the snow leopard is in a zoo, Tsar.

Here's a group of photos (was going to post only the one), but since they tell a story...

Fancy a kiss? Irina's husband didn't, and leaned as far away from the toothy zebra as possible when the animal gave a toothy grin for the photo.

Kings of the jungle: However, the two young big cats are as scared of the sheep as the sheep are of them.

The cute cubs have taken to chasing after the sheep on their ranch and rounding them up in a style akin to One Man and his Dog.

@Irishk,
Irish, The zebra sequence is priceless. And I can hear it now at the 2011 Westminster Dog Show: "And in the herding group, we've got the Old English Sheepdog, the German Shepherd, and a Lion. A lion? That can't be right." Great to see those two little felines working the herd. Thanks, kid.

The cute little creature in the picture above is an ermine, also known as a stoat and the short tailed weasel. The beautiful coloring of this relative of otters, mink and wolverines is the ermine’s summer coat. The ermine’s coat changes to a thick warm all white coat in the winter. The only part of the ermine’s coat to not change color is the very tip of its tail, which remains black.

Pepe the spider monkey. The black spider monkey was orphaned at three days old when its mother was killed by poachers who hunt the species as their meat is considered a delicacy. Pictured at an animal sanctuary in the heart of the Amazon basin in Bolivia. Photograph: Roy Mangersnes/Rex Features

It turns out that the bright white plumage of snowy owls is not just for show. In fact, it is a warning signal that tells rival birds to back off, according to recent findings in the International Journal of Avian Science.

Over 10 winters, researchers from the University of Saskatchewan in Canada and the Museum of Natural Sciences in Spain watched the behavior of snowy owls and learned that owls with the whitest feathers reflected the brightest signals over long distances to protect their territories.

Researchers observed owls rotating their bodies to face the sun from their perches. Whiter birds maximized their signals from the snow-covered ground, while spotted white owls kept a higher perch.

“The birds constantly shift throughout the day and even change the height of their perch depending on the sun,” explained lead researcher Gary Bortolotti.

One of the largest and most powerful predatory birds in the Americas has returned to Belize for the first time in over 60 years. Scientists recently confirmed the sighting of a Harpy eagle nest in the Maya Mountains with as many as five birds, in an area where the birds had become extinct due to human activity.
