And then there was this interesting critter submitted by Margarethe Brummermann which had the following caption.

Mrs Mesquite Girdler caught in the act. She chewed just through the cambium layer of a branch, so it will die. This keeps the tree from gumming up the eggs that she'll deposit in the branch while the larvae will still have relatively fresh wood to eat. Several other species of insects, who do not girdle themselves, will still make similar use of her branch. And we don't have to prune the tree this year.

@rosborne979,
i've been watching a BBC series about the coast of England, it's amazing the diversity of marine wildlife on the English coast, during the salmon spawn in North West Scotland they see spectacular displays of dolphins, the dolphins eat their fill of salmon each day and then spend the rest of the time playing, some jumping at least twice the length of their bodies in the air

The photographer that writes below took the picture of the dolphin's fall, his friend took the first one:

Quote:
Last saturday, we were sailing back home with a 4-year-old cousin of mine aboard. We asked her "do you want to see some dolphins?", and her answer came out so excitedly we had to tell her we might not be able to find them... they might have gone home to have dinner. We've seen them several times this summer, and the sea was so calm and beautiful we thought they were about to appear by the boat... And they did. Imagine the child's reaction.
The number of dolphins wasn't great (some dozens, though), but their performance was the most spectacular we've ever seen.
