Traces of Texas
For reasons that are not known, Gonzales County has the highest concentration of Crested Caracaras in the United States. The Crested Caracara is a pretty cool bird. One of its primary advantages is that it is both a scavenger (eating things that are already dead, like vultures) and a raptor, quite capable of killing live animals with its powerful talons and beak. They have even been observed running down prey in the water. Crested Carcacaras are the national bird of Mexico and are often called "Mexican Eagles," though they are, in fact, members of the falcon family. Here's a photo of a Crested Caracara in flight. It was taken by Dan Pancamo and posted on Wikipedia.
