Long threads, how to find where you last left them

Reply Tue 12 Nov, 2002 12:27 am
I last left Deb's digression thread at about page 15. It is somewhere in the twenties now. When I go to the thread I can see page 1, 2,3, and some dots, and then 21, 22, 23..

how do I just find page 15, other than clicking on 4, and then 5, and then, 6, and then 7 and ...

or to follow it, do I have to do updates?

Great question! First of all I'd like to ask everyone if they think the pagination threashold should be increased. It's at 10 but if it's higher it will make this easier (but also might make threads load more slowly if there are huge posts).

Secondly, the pagination changes as you, well, page through it.

If you don't feel link paging all the way back do this:

The links for the pagination look like this:

viewtopic.php?t=31&start=20

The red is the topic number the blue is for the pagination.

If the threshold for pagination is 10 that means the link for page 15 would be like this (note the red part):

viewtopic.php?t=31&start=140 Edit: Not 150 but 140 because post 140 starts on page 15.

This is of course based on the 10 post threshold for pagination.

That's clear as mud...

Under MS Inetrnet Explorer in that other forum that shall remain nameless, I would search the site for my nom-de-net, from the bottonm up. that takes me to either the last thing I said, or the last thing said to/about me... (except for thems what call me SP...)

But here?

Yeah Craven I'm all for increasing the pagination threashold. What about letting people make their own setting for how many posts to show on a page?

Monger, I already have code to allow members to determine their own pagination. I'd forgotten about it.

Someone else wrote it up and I just need to check and test it. Thanks for the reminder.

ossobuco,

Lemme try to explain it better:

http://www.able2know.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=709&start=140

That is the link for page 15. The last number is what you have to change to jump right to a post.

Since it's set to 10 posts per page you just have to do this.

Page 15 = 140
Page 16 = 150

So page 20 would be:

got it.

I expect you may have to explain this more than once. I have checked in about once a day and see I am several hundred posts behind, oh, good!!!!
This will be a navigational stopper for the slow such as moi. The old hands, however slow, will get it over time, but perhaps an instruction for newbies once you work it out???? I'll try to send Deb over here to read this, as her threads are apt to pile up, as it were.

If you have a fast connection you will be able to utilize a feature I intend to install (when I find the time).

It will allow you to determine how many posts show per page. If your connection is fast you can set it to somthing like 100 and there will be few pages per thread.
