Whenever I hear Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love," I have to fan my collar and ask nervously, "My... is it getting hot in here?"

I have some Aerosmith and some Queen because those are both bands I like.

Mr. B has a lot of Pink Floyd and some Zepplin hanging around somewhere.

I was never a huge fan of either band but "Wish You Were Here" is one of my all time ever favorite songs. Maybe I need to give them both a relisten.

We're off to Target today on some errands - I think I'll dig around and see what they have....

THE WHO's "Live at Leeds" is high energy top to bottom, and the lyrics are fine for the youngins...

Given the music that you've mentioned, what you are looking for is generally rock music. There is a huge, and vast catalog thereof to chose from.

One modern rock band that has songs that range from slow rock to hard rock is The White Stripes.

A project band, The Raconteurs, with the main song writer of The White Stripes, Jack White, also have an album, "Pretty Boy Soldiers," with a great set of songs that range from slow rock to hard rock.

Oh, and their lyrics aren't very objectionable at all.

White Stripes are one of my favorite bands.

Alternative rock, garage sound fused with a lot of blues guitar.

I like the White Stripes too - or most of it. On some of the songs his voice really grates on me though.

Mo does have a new favorite song circa: today. I dug out a best of Aerosmith to listen to as we ran errands. He listened but didn't rock out until track 4: "Walk This Way".

It was funny to watch - he was headbanging, rocking out in his little car seat the first few times. The next few times he seemed almost hypnotized or something -- listening very intently.

Of course, the song is quite dirty and every time he would say "Play it again!" I'd see Tico Swartzenegger shaking his finger at me.

Anyway....

Target only had "Back in Black" today so I bought it. I came with a flip side DVD of studio footage and interviews. I'll try to give it a sit down listening to tonight.

Only some of them?

Laughing

I don't see a problem with "Walk This Way." Like BPB said, the innuendo lyrics aren't understood, particularly at the pace of that song.

I agree with Tico that there's a distinction between innuendo and flat out "DIE, A$$HOLE!" kind of stuff. Another schoolbus song was "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood and I was shocked, shocked when it went through my head recently and I looked it up on Youtube and finally (OK so maybe I'm a bit slow on the uptake) figured out what it was about. When I was 10 or whatever, NO idea.

Back in black HMMMM. I have to say I'm a Bon Scott purist. but whatever floats.

Boom now the kid has a Gitar you need Stairway to Heaven then Deep Purple, Smoke on the Water, closly followed by Wild Thing by the Trogs. All mandatoryy riffs for a budding guitarist.

Ummm and (sorry guys) The land down under By Men At Work and The boys light up by Australian crawl

Best ever Beer Songs

Wow ... there are a bunch of bands I've not heard of in that link you provided, DP. Some good ones though ....

And ZZ Top definitely rocks.

I'm a huge Bon Scott fan as well... my all time favorite Ac/Dc album is Let There Be Rock... but Back in Black is an incredible album. Power Age and Highway to Hell also.... the really early ac/dc, although I'm crazy for Bon.... the production is so abyssmal it's hard to listen to....

That Wikipedia article was really interesting. Thanks for linking that, Shapeless.

This really caught my eye:

Quote:
The Kinks' 1964 tune "You Really Got Me" has even been cited as one of the very first 'heavy metal' songs: it was perhaps the first to use a repetitive, distorted, power-chord riff as its basis.

I adore The Kinks and this is such a classic tune. I would have never thought it to be heavy metal.

So anyway....

I sat down and watched the documentary while on hold with Ikea to order curtains. I only mention this because it struck me that some days my life is very Dr. Jekyll, Ms. Hyde.

It was a good show -- very enlightening. It started with the Bon Scott years and then his death (what a sad, strange story) and onto the making of "Back in Black".

It was interesting to hear that the lyrics were so secondary to the music. "We've made up this song. It goes like this. We call it this. Make up some words. We record in 15 minutes."

Their creative process was not really a process but a big bang kind of thing. I would love to be able to think like that for just one day.

Idea - Creation - Shower, bath, off to bed.

And I had forgotten how much I like that song "You Shook Me All Night Long"!

And this gets back to the question --

What makes for "heavy metal".

Am I wrong about "Lunatic Fringe"?

When I first put on the Aerosmith CD the first song was "Dream On" -- one I really like. Mo said "This music is boring." I said "Just wait." Still, he was unimpressed until we got to track 4.

I'm trying to figure out what draws him to a certain song.
