Party on Wayne: a headbanger holiday

Mo digs metal, and I don't really know anything about it. I'm hoping there are some metal heads on here to lead me to the good stuff.

Keeping in mind that Mo is not quite six years old and his current favorite song is "Lunatic Fringe", who/what would your recommend he listen to?

Top 5 songs? Top five albums? Top five bands? Any good metal compilations that put together the best?

I want to buy some music that he likes and I don't know where to start.

Any help appreciated!

Metallica. Probably "Master of Puppets."

Black Sabbath. They have a greatest hits cd.

Led Zeppelin(metal? But best rock band ever to take stage).

Pantera, namely the album "Vulgar Display of Power."

Iron Maiden, also have a greatest hits.

AC/DC, Back in Black.

Not so much "metal," but great albums:

Guns n Roses, Appetite for Destruction.

Van Halen, 1984.

Motley Crue, Too Fast For Love

He he likes "Lunatic Fringe," he'd probably dig Pink Floyd. Not "metal," though.

Although at age 5 I might recommend Radio Disney.

Radio Disney!? Isn't that the one where the prepubescent girls sing versions of "Ooops I did it again"?

No thanks.

I think bubble-gum-pop is too dangerous for children.

Red Rider isn't metal? See. I told you I don't know metal. What would they be considered? He likes stuff like that. And Queen. He loves Queen. And Aerosmith. And things like Slappy's "maybe not metal" list. What is that stuff considered? Hard rock?

On Mr. B's sattelite radio they have a metal station that Mo likes to listen to and that's where he comes up with this.

He might like Pink Floyd. I have some of that to try.

I dunno .. lots of "Hanna Montana" and "Jessie McCartney" songs, I think.

It's for kids. As opposed to any of the groups listed by Slappy. Wouldn't recommend Metallica, Black Sabbath, Pantera, or G&R to any 6 year old audience.

Why is that, Tico?

I really don't know and I would like to hear your reasoning.

I have an 8-y.o. nephew who's obsessed with Queen (ugh). I got him listening to the Ramones now, which I think is a vast improvement.

I personally don't think the lyrics are all that appropriate for children of tender years. Not all of their songs are explicit, of course, and some are worse than others, but here's a sampling.

Quote:
Suicide Solution -- Black Sabbath

Wine is fine but whiskeys quicker
Suicide is slow with liquor
Take a bottle and drown your sorrows
Then it floods away tomorrows

Evil thoughts and evil doings
Cold, alone you hang in ruins
Thought that youd escape the reaper
You cant escape the master keeper

cause you feel like youre living a lie
Such a shame whos to blame and youre wondering why
Then you ask from your cask us there life after birth
What you sow can mean hell on this earth

Now you live inside a bottle
The reapers traveling at full throttle
Its catching you but you dont see
The reaper is you and the reaper is me

Breaking laws, knocking doors
But theres no one at home
Made your bed, rest your head
But you lie there and moan
Where to hide, suicide is the only way out
Dont you know what its really about

Quote:
Am I Evil -- Metallica

My mother was a witch, she was burned alive
Thankless little bitch, for the tears I cried
Take her down now, don't want to see her face
All blistered and burnt, can't hide my disgrace

Twenty-seven, everyone was nice
Gotta see 'em make 'em pay the price
See their bodies out on the ice
Take my time

Am I evil? Yes, I am
Am I evil? I am man, yes, I am

Quote:
F@cking Hostile -- Pantera

Almost every day
I see the same face
On broken picture tube
It fits the attitude
If you could see yourself
You put you on a shelf
Your verbal masturbate
Promise to nauseate
Today Ill play the part of non-parent
Not make a hundred rules
For you to know about yourself
Not lie and make you believe
Whats evil is making love
And making friends
And meeting God youre own way
The right way

(chorus) to see
To bleed
Cannot be taught
In turn
Youre making us
F@cking hostile

Quote:
Mr. Brownstone -- Guns & Roses

Now I get up around whenever
I used ta get up on time
But that old man he's a real muthaf@cker
Gonna kick him on down the line

I used ta do a little but a little wouldn't do
So the little got more and more
I just keep tryin' ta get a little better
Said the little better than before
I used ta do a little but a little wouldn't do
So the little got more and more
I just keep tryin' ta get a little better
Said the little better than before

Chorus
Shoved it in the bindle and I shot it in the middle
And it, it drove outta my mind
I should've known better, said I wish I never met her Said I,
I leave it all behind Yowsa!

Quote:
You're Crazy -- Guns & Roses

You're crazy, hey, hey
You know you're crazy, oh my!
You're f@ckin' crazy, oh child
You know you're crazy
Ay,ay,ay,ay,ay,ay,ah,ah,ah,ah, yeah!
Woh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Oh na,no,na,no,na,no,na,no,na,no,no,no
No,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no
No,no,no, no, no, no, no,no,no,no,no,no
no,no,no! Oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no, Oh no, ow! -Woooh, yeah!

Say, boy, where ya comin' from?
Where'd ya get that point of view?
When I was younger
I knew a Motherf@cker like you,
and she said,
'You don't need my love,
You wanna sati-satisfaction,' Bitch
You don't need my love,
You've got to find yourself another
Another piece, another piece
Of the action

Thanks, Tico. I see your point. The lyrics are violent.

I read around a bit and found that there are three "schools" of metal: death, speed and thrash. I think maybe I should focus a bit on the "speed" end of the spectrum as it sounds like that is the power ballad, guitar rock that I'm talking about.

Personally though, I'm not bothered by the lyrics in the metal music I've heard as I think it is really secondary to the instruments.

Explicit lyrics breakdown:

Slappy Doo Hoo wrote:
Metallica. Probably "Master of Puppets." Not aware of any excessive swearing in this one. The song quoted below is on another album.

Black Sabbath. They have a greatest hits cd. Lyrics ok for the most part that I can think of.

Led Zeppelin(metal? But best rock band ever to take stage). Lyrics ok.

Pantera, namely the album "Vulgar Display of Power." Some explicit lyrics.

Iron Maiden, also have a greatest hits. Lyrics ok for the most part, subject matter is stupid satan stuff, but a little kid won't have a clue.

AC/DC, Back in Black. Lyrics ok.

Not so much "metal," but great albums:

Guns n Roses, Appetite for Destruction. Some explicit lyrics...musically great, great album.

Van Halen, 1984. Lyrics are clean...great album.

Motley Crue, Too Fast For Love....lyrics are ok.

No, speed metal is just all very fast metal...not ballad/guitar rock, which is more along the lines of GNR, Motley Crue, Van Halen, who are, again, not really "heavy metal." Metal influenced, but not full out metal. Full out metal would be Pantera, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Anthrax, ect.

Thanks for the clarification, Slappy. What would the bands like Guns and Roses and Van Halen be considered?

I remember the 1984 album and I remember liking it even though I was not big on Van Halen. Perhaps I'll start there.

And I'm familiar with AC/DC so that might be another good one to try.

I spent those years listening to The Clash, et.al. so missed out on the whole genera/era. Playing catch-up makes me look a little stupid but I'm learning! Thanks Slappy the educator!

We used to call 'em "hair metal" or "pop metal," though those two particular bands you mentioned arguably qualified respectable, good ol' rock n' roll. The more derogatory "hair metal" epithet was reserved for bands like Poison, Bon Jovi, Ratt, Winger, etc. Those were the ones who could be counted on to churn out the power ballads.

Do you think I should get some Judas Priest?

I knew Bear would show up here but dadpad too!?

Tell your wives that I am not to blame for the forehead bruises.

Okay. So it sounds like I need:

Van Halen - David Lee Roth era.

Judas Priest

AC/DC - Bon Scott era (does that include "Back in Black"?) I like that song "Dirty Deeds" but I didn't know who sang it.

That sounds like a good start. Feel free to keep adding. It has really been interesting to investigate a style of music that I missed. I think I will enjoy my excursion into metal/hard rock.

Thanks guys!

Back in Black was AC/DC's first post-Bon Scott album, but it's still a classic.

I'll put in another vote for Zeppelin. As was mentioned already, they might not quite qualify as metal, but metal wouldn't have happened without 'em. Maybe try Houses of the Holy?
