Maybe nobody who comes here knows the exact reason? Firstly, it is not just Kerala that observes second Saturday holidays, but all over India. Some states have the fourth Saturday too.

I have a theory. There are so many religions in India, and so many possible holidays, that for practical reasons it has been decided by national and state governments, as a compromise, to put many of them together once or twice a month, as otherwise running government ofices, banks, etc would be impossible. They would be closed nearly every day to satisfy the demands of all the religious groups. Even so, a group
in Tamil Nadu has requested the electricity board to change to the third saturday because of problems experienced by government employees collecting salary on the 10th of the month and wanting to pay CC electricity bills soon after, but they cannot if the day is a saturday, so there are huge queues on the next Monday.

Isn't Kerala the famous city in which "red rain" alien microbes fell a few years ago? I'm certain it is!

Nick, I just got your cable bill in the mail.

It's due tomorrow. I'll leave it clipped to your mailbox in the morning.

Wow, you sure do get a lot of pay per views.

Yes, Chai, but strictly for athletic and news programs. Please ignore the so-called porn charges.

Nickfun and Chai Tea are childish trolls who have nothing helpful to offer. They should grow up. I am thinking of reporting them to the moderators.

The origin of the Second Saturday holiday tradition dates back to the days of East India Company.

The Book of Genesis in the Holy Bible says the Seventh Day or Saturday was the day for rest and worship after the six days it took God to create the world. Planet Saturn, from which the day’s name is derived, being the second largest, the second of Saturdays in a month was designated as a holiday.

There seems to be no other country that follows this tradition except perhaps Israel because the Jews observe Saturdays as the day of Sabbath.
Sabbath in Christianity is a weekly day of rest or religious observance, derived from the Biblical Sabbath.

@ranmahs,
Second Saturday is very important for me. Every secondary Saturday my company gives me half days leave. I am very happy to take half day leave, because i also enjoy second Saturday with next day Sunday.
