Does anybody care about your right for at school and would you like it if dogs came around snifing your lockers to see if you have drugs, weapons, or alcohol?

You have the right to a school environment free of disruptive and criminal elements. The authorities have the obligation to secure and ensure that right for you. Your best advice is to refrain from possession or association with contraband while on/en route to-from school property and/or attending school-sanctioned/sponsored events.

I feel it is the responsibility of the authorities to provide, maintain, and ensure a secure school environment. That's the way it is - and should be - period. If anything with which you are involved is contrary to law or to school policy, keep it away from school or be ready to accept the consequences.

I wouldn't care as I don't have drugs, weapons or alcohol in my locker.

I would care if someother kid did have weapons, drugs and alcohol in his/her locker and would want a dog or machine to sniff the kid out. No kid needs alcohol, drugs or a weapon to study physics, chemistry or calculus.

Do they?

You might want to take a look at this legal case (yes, it's over 20 years old, but it still applies): New Jersey vs. TLO

How many rights you have under the Constitution is decided by the Courts. The Courts have repeatedly ruled that high school students have less of a right to privacy when they are on school grounds.

You can look up the cases and read the reason judges feel this way if you would like. But my interpretation is that there is a special need for people who run public schools to be able to ensure the safety of all students.

The ability of schools to search lockers is an easy case for me. The Lockers are school property.

However schools have been given the right to search student property (for example back packs) with a much lower standard than police would have (police have to have "reasonable cause").
