Just got my "hot off the presses" copy of PC World. In it, is a rather detailed article about Windows Vista, Microsoft's new operating system that replaces XP. It is expected that the system will be offered to the public early next year.

I found that my hardware was ok, but that with 512 mg. of RAM, I needed more. Interestingly enough, before I read the article, I had ordered 1G of RAM, and as we speak, it is on its way to me.
It has a link to a little program that will scan your computer, and inform you if what you have now in terms of both software and hardware is compatible with Vista. Vista comes in a number of versions. PC World suggests that you don't get the basic version, even though it is the cheapest...........the advantages are not worth the expense.
The magazine has a neat little program, the "Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor" that willl scan your computer, and determine if there are any incompatibilities with Vista, in terms of both hardware and software.

There is always the question as to whether it is wise to upgrade an existing system, or start off clean with a new computer which is designed to use the new operating system. The other issue is whether it is smart to be "the first one on the block" to have the new system.
I am a bit of a conservative in this area. I bought my XP machine in early 2004, after the service pack 1 had been released. I am really not in the mood to be faced with bugs. I also have problems with spending a lot of money for an operating system to be put on a computer that will fast become obsolete.
I think that I will wait awhile, until the service pack comes out on Vista, and then get an entirely new computer. Right now, my computer is doing what I want it to do, so I really don't need an upgrade. Just to give you an idea of my mindset, the first thing that I did when I got my XP computer was to set it to the "classic look", which is the vanilla Windows 98 interface.
What do you think about Vista? Do you want it? Do you need it? Will you upgrade an existing computer, or get an entirely new system? Will you take a "wait and see" attitude?
I will definitely wait and see.
Reviews of the beta versions have not been too hot; there are still security issues.
I run xp, and I have to admit that I cannot think how that can be improved for my useage as long as you run antispyware, antivirus and use a non-MS firewall.
Since I already have all of those, I think I will stick with xp for at least 2 years.
By then the hackers may have done their worst!!
My finances render it all moot for me.
I yam what I yam.
readiness for Vista
It's useless to read an article that refers to a non-existent lank in that article. The reference 'find.pcworld.com/51472' was supposed to give me the link to the program that evaluated my computer to see what I needed before downloading Vista. It did not.
A waste of valuable time.
