I was being a little sarcastic ... it's not a fun time of the year. Mad Early on I used to claim the minimum exemptions and they took out buttloads of withholding throughout the year and gave it back to me after filing (without any interest). Then I said to self ... "self can't you invest that money throughout the year and at least make some interest"? So, I claim the max exemptions allowed by law and just about break even at tax time. What really kills me is those folks foolish enough to use some tax service to file a short form for them; get charged up the butt for the "service", then apply for a refund loan at greater than 25% APR. Those folks haven't got a clue! Rolling Eyes

Back to taxes ... when I was in college (many moons ago) I had a room mate who was brilliant with the books, but short on the working smarts. He had a part time job in a restaurant and made a few bucks. He took his taxes to B & S Block and they did him a short form ... Income, tax, withholding ... three line entries and they subtracted the tax from the withholding and told him he was getting a $38 refund. Of course they charged him $35 for the service. The biggest travesty though ... he was happy! Rolling Eyes

I don't mind if you don't mind my opinion on the matter. It usually pisses people off though.

I try to do the same as you Ox, take out the maximum allowable deductions, and put the max into the company 401(k) and get the company match. It's only 4%, but it's free money.
I usually get enough back from the feds to pay my state tax.
