[RESOLVED] PC turns off when playing games.

Well, I built my own pc around March and it didn't have any problems, could handle any game with relative ease.

All of a sudden, at least I don't remember doing anything in particular to get the problems started, whilst I was playing World of Warcraft the pc would just automatically restart, didn't happen often and never at critical times so I continued like that.

Checked the fans and all were running. I think it might be the power supply but I don't think I should have problems with only one dvd drive, one memory stick and one video card.

Every time I play graphic intensive games it'll take me up to 100% CPU Usage, older games like Unreal Tournament will take me to 40%. I have an Athlon 64 3200+ and a Nvidia GeForce 6800.

Right now I can play games for around an hour before it crashes/reboots the pc.

The problems is not the fans.. any idea what it could be?

You say the problem is not the fans - Are you sure that your CPU heatsink and fan are powerful enough? Has dust or fluff choked the heatsink? Sure sounds like overheating to me. Maybe the PSU is getting hot?

sounds like a heatsink/fan problem, have you had the home heat turned on/up?

Dismantle the box and blow out the heatsink anyway. Clean the vents and air access.

my xp did a similar thing and the above fixed the problem.

You PC has developed an almost human self awareness and has decided it doesn't want to play those games anymore. It yearns for more human interaction. It wishes to be free to frolick and play among the flowers. In other words, it's lonely.

But seriously folks, what kind of motherboard do you have? I have a custom system with an ASUS mb and come to find out they'd been having recurring problems with their chipset fan. They sent me a free replacement fan when I called them.

The CPU heatsink and fan are the ones that came in the box with the processor. The power supply came from a generic case, so I know it's not very good.

don't have home heat so that couldn't be the problem, if anything it's getting colder...

I have an ASUS mb, but mine doesn't have a chipset fan or don't know what fan you're referring to.

I'll post the exact specs on my mb and ps when I get home. Will get those compressed air thinguies too, it's been a long time since I've blowed papers accross surfaces anyway.

So the power supply can just go bad all of a sudden? It used to be able to work just fine.

Haven't had time to look up the exact model, will do soon.

The power supply can just go bad all of a sudden.

Our home built computer's power supply crapped out on us 6 months after purchase.

Yes it can. Especially cheap ones that come with a case. Sometimes they only last 6 months to 1 year. My cheap power supply worked "just fine" right up to the moment it caught fire.

Lots of electronic stuff works just fine... until it breaks!

just wanted to make an update hoping this thread helps someone else, I hate when I'm looking for help on forums and the original poster doesn't state if he/she had solved the problem.

I bought an Antec 350W Power Supply about a month ago, but I hadn't had time to play games for more than half an hour so I wasn't sure it was stable. I've played HalfLife2 for more than 3 hours and it didn't fail once, but it still gives me 100% CPU Usage. So the problem was solved.

In fact your multicolored word was what gave me the assurance that I wasn't gonna err buying a decent power supply.

I didn't say thanks, so... thanks!
