Gary Garland, WELCOME to A2K. FYI, A2K also has face-to-face gatherings in the US and elsewhere. The Boston Gathering happens more frequently and informal quickies. The big one we're now planning for is the A2K Three Continent Gathering to be held in San Francisco in April 2004. There have been gatherings in Florida, Albuquerque, and London. I think there's one planned for Texas in short order. Most of the gatherings have shared their experiences and photos, so many of us know how many of the participants look in addition to their avatar or nom de plume. See you around. c.i.

Craven's given you the background and techie stuff...he's a star.
As for the "regulars" who have showed up since, we just feel part of a community. We share stories of our lives and links to things we like. As c.i. says, we meet in person. He, Gautam and I met in London. I know that others have met in Boston, Florida, etc.
We already knew each other from abuzz, in many instances, but the technical side of this forum is SO much better (fewer problems, less downtime etc.) and there is a minimal element of annoyance from those who wish to attack others.
I'd guess that this forum has an older average age than most "chatrooms"/discussion sites of anything like this size...and therefore has a more mature feel (most threads!).
It's a really warm place to be - welcome. I hope you stay for the content.
