I got a Seagate Barracuda 400GB internal HD and am in the proccess of buying an older second hand PC to put it in. I want it to run on xp so it must be a Pentium 3 system atleast. The problem is, older machines have a maximum amount of hardware (bios) supported HD space.

So my question is..

Can the 400GB SATA be made compatible on any pentium 3 runnning xp using a "sata controller", in case the MB doesnt have an in-build sata controller yet?

I'm thinking of buying one of the following systems:
- Compaq - Pentium III 866 mhz
- HP e-PC - Pentium III 733Mhz
- HP Vectra VL - Pentium III 550 mhz
- IBM Aptiva 2158 - AMD K6-2 380 mhz

An other question, is the AMD K5 380 with 128 ram strong enough to run XP?

First, most machines built after 2001, running XPSP1 or later, should have no real problem with large drives, though some might require a BIOS update -mind you now, thats "SHOULD have no real problem]", not "WILL have no real problem[/i]" ... a trip to the support pages of the machine vendor's website can be a good idea - you may find what you want to know. That said, HERE'S a decent, if slightly dated, discussion of the ins and outs of upgrading to large drives - most of it is still perfectly applicable today.

Second, an AMD K5 380/128RAM will prolly run XP, but prolly won't be able to do much with it in any fashion likely to satisfy you.
