Here are some quotes from experts who know more about these deranged people than I do.
..................................
People want to be happy and to avoid pain and suffering. They seek to maintain and increase their control over themselves and their surroundings. And they desire to maintain and increase their prestige, respect, and esteem. Viewed from the perspective of these three principles about the self, masochism is a startling paradox.
The self is developed to avoid pain, but masochists seek pain. The self strives for control, but masochists seek to relinquish control. The self aims to maximize its esteem, but masochists deliberately seek out humiliation.
.
Krafft-Ebing, the nineteenth-century psychiatrist who coined the term:
"By masochism I understand a particular perversion of the psychical sexual life in which the individual affected, in sexual feeling and thought, is controlled by the idea of being completely and unconditionally subject to the will of a person of the opposite sex; of being treated by this person as a master -- humiliated and abused. This idea is colored by lustful feeling; the masochist lives in fantasies, in which he creates situations of this kind and often attempts to realize them. By this perversion his sexual instinct is often made more or less insensible to the normal charms of the opposite sex - incapable of a normal sexual life - psychically impotent."
...............
My research, however, did not jibe with my clinical reality. The people who presented to me were not immature or inferior. In fact, the reverse seemed to be the case. Masochists are more likely to be successful by social standards: professionally, sexually, emotionally, culturally, in marriages or out. They are frequently individuals of inner strength of character, possessed of strong coping skills with an ethical sense of individual responsibility. A famous study of the "sexual profile of men in power" found to the researchers' surprise, a high quantity of masochistic sexual activity among successful politicians, judges and other important and influential men..

I am reminded of a passage from TSB.

Satanism encourages any form of sexual expression you may desire, so long as it hurts no one
else. This statement must be qualified, to avoid misinterpretation. By not hurting another, this
does not include the unintentional hurt felt by those who might not agree with your views on
sex, because of their anxieties regarding sexual morality. Naturally, you should avoid
offending others who mean a great deal to you, such as prudish friends and relatives.
However, if you earnestly endeavor to escape hurting them, and despite your efforts they
accidentally find out, you cannot be held responsible, and therefore should feel no guilt as a
result of either your sexual convictions, or their being hurt because of those convictions. If
you are in constant fear of offending the prudish by your attitude towards sex, then there is no
sense in trying to emancipate yourself from sexual guilt. However, no purpose is served by
flaunting your permissiveness.
The other exception to the rule regards dealings with masochists. A masochist derives
pleasure from being hurt; so denying the masochist his pleasure-through-pain hurts him just as
much as actual physical pain hurts the non-masochist. The story of the truly cruel sadist
illustrates this point: The masochist says to the sadist, "beat me." To which the merciless
sadist replies, "NO!" If a person wants to be hurt and enjoys suffering, then there is no reason
not to indulge him in his wont.

Its perfectly natural open-minded adult fun you enjoy it.

Its acceptably kinky adventure if you don't do it yourself, but aren't bothered a bit if other folks do it.

Its nasty, perverted, and downright sick if its something only folks with whom you take issue practice.

This is SO not the sickest part of human behavior.

How could you possibly count voluntary behavior between adults as worse than people who get their kicks molesting kids? Or raping someone?

And what about all the absolutely hideous non-sexual things people do? How about real torture, for instance? I mean, jeez, the things workers in chicken processing plants do to the birds before they kill them are way worse than BDSM! I think you haven't listened to the news in a while if this seems that bad to you...

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association, (the shrink's bible), anyone who engages regularly in masochistic sex is mentally ill by definition.
.
What I mean by the sickest part of human behaviour, is the person who seeks and pays for pain and humiliation.
.
There are many who love to punish and humiliate, it seems to be a human trait. Humans are far more cruel than animals. There are politicians who think that allowing 'water boarding' is a no-brainer.

Check my posts and see that I am more upset about torture than any other member of this forum.
.
PS, years ago I had an adventure with an academic from Paris. All went well until she showed me her arsenal of riding crops etc. I told her that the moment she causes me physical pain I will leave her house and never return. After that we had six months of incredible straight sex.

Exactly. 'natural', 'kinky', and 'perverted' are all quite relative to the perceiver Smile

Interesting point, Stuh: a sadist who humiliates or causes pain that is desired by the masochist is, in effect, behaving altruistically.

It seems possible that such practices serve "rational" compensatory goals. For example, an individual who is forced to be in control within his or her professional life might take RELIEF by giving up control in his or her sexual life--a kind of balancing act.
And is it not possible that a person living a professionally subordinate and humiliating life might take on the role of dominant in his or her sexual life--also as a kind of balancing act?

These speculations are relatively superficial, of course. In most cases, I suspect, such sexual (like many other) drives have their origins in deeply UNCONSCIOUS rather than compensatory "rational" goals.

Well, this role reversal /balancing act you speak of is the stereotypical example that we always hear about.

Quote:
That would make the whole BDSM movement completely legal and above-board.

Yes indeed BDSM is legal...what's your point? And as far as it being a movement, I wasn't aware that there was a "movement." Is that the new rage these days? I haven't noticed it...

DI- did you find in your research any statistics as the incidence of childhood sexual abuse in either the dominants or masochists? I know that would not correlate with the research you posted that said masochists seem to be successful and functionally normal in other areas of their life, but the psychology of the actual act makes me wonder if that might be a factor.

I've read research that states that pedophiles are often people who've themselves been abused at crucial points in their sexual development (although certainly not all people who are sexually abused as children go on to be abusers). But the theory is that they get stuck at whatever point in their sexual maturation they were abused, and have learned to associate sexual satisfaction innapropriately with whatever activity or behavior they themselves were subjected to.

I wonder if masochists have had experiences as children at being controlled or having pain inflicted upon them that they have integrated into their psyche as sexually fulfilling. In terms of dominants - I wonder if they'd had experiences in which they were controlled, and find it sexually fulfilling to act out their childhood fantasies of turning the table.

Also- are most dominants women and masochists men? I'm just going on how it's most often portrayed. If so, that's an interesting reversal of typical gender roles...I wonder if that also plays a part in it.

I don't remember posting that, but it sounds true. I was in Las Vegas once and found out (from an insider) that Madams go to hotel rooms to 'treat' clients with whips. They charge double the regular fee and many of the men who pay are powerful businessmen.
.
Dominas are in it for the money, childhood memories are probably not causing their choice of business.

This is what I was referring to. It wasn't something you said, it was in the research you posted.

I don't doubt that some people do it for the money, and that some people do it for simple pleasure, but I would be interested to know if the incidence of childhood sexual abuse was higher among this population. It seems that at least the submissives or masochists associate sexual pleasure with shame or humiliation and punishment- and I wonder why that might be. Just a thought...

During the Hippie years I knew a young couple who were artists. She had a slight limp and always had at least one black eye that he had given her. They were constantly fighting and she loved to be beaten to a pulp.
.
To me he was the heavy, punishing a little female even if she asked for it. Two sickies that everybody disapproved of.

And I doubt she liked being beaten up. Unless you know other wise, in which case, whatever. If she wants it, and he wants it, go for it.

Can you name one or two dominas who do it without getting paid by the hour?
