Autumn flowers

I was at the market this morning, buying a few groceries. They were selling big pots of mums, and other autumn flowers, and I noticed these beautiful orange sunflower-type flowers. I think they're called Van Goghs.

Here's what they look like:

See the orange flowers in the pic? They were really pretty. But when I try to google some info about them, I keep getting sites about Van Gogh the painter. I can't seem to find anything about these flowers.

Anyone know anything about them? Also, what are some of your favorite autumn flowers?

Actually, they look sort of like zinnias. But zinnias are a type of sunflower, aren't they?

Yes, that's a good possibility!

I was just reading some of the Van Gogh sites. He did many paintings of flowers, even did a whole series on sunflowers -- but he also did some of marigolds .....and chrysanthemums too! Sigh....this isn't making my job any easier!

I think I'll go back to that market tomorrow and see if I can get any more info from them...

I stayed away because littlek seemed in complete control of the situation.
Yes, they are marigolds. As a former art history major I can tell you that Van Gogh never painted any marigolds (nor mums I believe). He was seriously into sunflowers.

(notice I did not show off any of my knowledge of botanical latin in this post)

The flowers are orchid like. It's habit is bowed stalks (not bushy like the sedum). No scent, shade tolerant, late blooming. It is almost always white based with pink/purple, magenta spots, but can be solid white, pale yellow or pink.

Wildflower honey? I wonder....

I took this shot just as the sedum buds were starting to open up.

But he did, Greenie! I found this painting on one of the Van Gogh sites. He did this one during his time at Saint-Remy. It has blue irises in front, but there are orange marigolds in the upper left hand corner.

There was also a painting of a chrysanthemum with wild flowers in a vase that he did.

littlek, I'll see what I can do about taking a picture and posting it here. It would help if everyone could see them! They have such a beautiful orange color -- they're perfect autumn flowers!
