To me it makes more sense to assume that these "primitive humans" WERE using abstract concepts, which we tend to treat as though they are something else.
With this assumption the myths and rituals make some sense. More than if we assume they are literal.
The pride we as a culture feel on account of our own achievments is blinding us, and is perhaps rendering us more primitive than humans have been in a long time... (?)
