I am doing research for a novel. I need to know the procedures following the location of skeletal remains. If possible from the view of a small town sherrifs office. Thanks

Specific procedures might vary in detail, however, the basic considerations of evidence provenance and preservation should be followed. The remains should be undisturbed, the scene should be cordoned off, the coroner should be called in, the remains should be photographically documented in situ before being handled at all, the scene and surrounding area should be thoroughly photographed and manually searched for additional evidence, and all relevant evidence - photographs, notes, interview records, the remains themselves, etc. - should be maintained under a protocol of signed, traceable chain-of-custody. Of course, what should be done and what actually happens often are different things.
