A good reason to go to Myrtle Beach, hamburger!
Walter - The Berlin Arboretum website is fantastic.
Here's another link. Wish I'd known about that Bonsai Museum in Marbella a couple of years ago.

ARBORETUMS
anyone visiting BROOKGREEN GARDENS - our favourite times are march, when the alligators and flora awake from their wintersleep and november when the gators start getting ready for a good winter rest - should consider going across the highway( 17 south ) and visit HUNTINGTON BEACH STATE PARK. while it is not an arboretum, it is the site of ATALAYA, A REPLICA OF A MOORISH CASTLE and the former studio of ANNA HYATT HUNTINGTON. but the real attraction here is the abundance of birds, in particular shorebirds that are either on the flythrough or are wintering here. really a very rugged and beautiful place at the same time. highly recommended! hbg .........................................>>>>

ARBORETUM
anyone who is really fond of alligators should consider a visit to the OKEFENOKEE SWAMP in georgia. be warned : it is not an arboretum, i think it's nature as wild as can be - but it has it's own beauty! we have visited there twice ( both times in march BEFORE the mosquitoes become unbearable ) and where struck by it's natural beauty. it's worth paying the $10 to 20 it costs for a boattour, or rent or bring a canoe. AWESOME ! hbg

Piffka, you would love the mood of Atalaya. Brookgreen is lovely - my favourite part is the amazing aviary - as far from a zoo as I can imagine - but Atalaya can be haunting on a misty day.
Thanks for the recommendation -- some day I'll be in So. Carolina and will check it out. Just the name, Atalaya, has a romantic lilt to it.

Aviaries, don't we need an aviary question, gadszooks..............
Not to stop with the botanical gardens. Just today my mailman asked me, well, taunts me, as I must have explained early on that I am a landscape architect and he has never let me forget it, past any amount of weeds, etc.
Extremely deeply sorry I ever mentioned it. Anyway, he asked if I had been to the botanical gardens in Fort Bragg, and quite naturally I said no since I haven't been there (3 bad roads, which one do you want?) besides I am busy. But, I would like to go there. Heritage rose nursery, and so on. But the postman loved the botanical garden, 43 acres. Will try to get a link on the morrow...
I don't mean to asperse postmen. I am friends with two of my past postmen or women, and this particular guy is apparently very observing, and may possess wit, which is in low accumulation in any job.
We've been yesterday in Leiden (province South Holland, The Netherlands), where there's the famous
Hortus botanicus.
(Reviving this old thread ... and Leiden is my most favourite town in the Netherlands
)
It's the univerity''s botanical garden, so students not only get free entry but can read (magazines) and sunbath there
