Installing DVD Burner

My husband bought a DVD burner and installed it. He is a typical man and did not read the directions.
The DVD burner does not appear on My Computer like the CD ROM Burner and other devices that are plugged in.
There is only one port for the belt cable looking thing. He plugged one cable into two different devices.

Any suggestions?

Well, for one, read the damned instructions. More than one connection, each of which must be correctly made, is gonna be required, and there's gonna be a jumper on the back of the drive that's gonna hafta be set in the position appropriate to the drive's place in your machine's hierarchy - is it the only optical drive? If not, is it master or slave, primary/secondary? That out of the way, the drive's software - drivers and more - have gotta be installed. If the drive is replacing a drive that formerly was there, everything related to the original drive has gotta go - you don't want your machine to have any idea anything other than the new drive ever was in that bay.

1) Completely uninstall all drivers and software related to that drive bay, whether pertaining to the new drive or the old. Start from a clean slate.

2) Read and follow the new drives installation instructions - they'll be simple, no more than a fold-out page, just a few steps, with illustrations.

An alternate approach with high success probability would be to hire a teenager to throw it in for you - give the kid a few bucks and a hearty junkfood snack - it'll take aroiund 20 minutes, snack included.

Thanks for the help. My husband actually lost the instructions since he is getting ready for another deployment and there is army stuff/papers everywhere! Laughing

The master/slave was not set correctly.

Does that mean you've got the drive up and running now?
