Does somebody here work with perl and can give me a quick answer on how to evaluate a variable in a program?

if ($_ =~ /$EXPRESSION/$I)

I would like perl to recognise $I (value either 'i' or ' ')

found the solution somewhere else in the meantime.
Just in case somebody was wondering about it, too:

if ( /(?$I:$EXPRESSION)/ )
