I have an idea for a book that I'm currently writing,
the basic outline is that two friends go travelling together through Asia,
half way through India, they split up, X goes with his girlfriend and I go to stay with an Indian friend I have met, the two friends arrange to meet up a month later in Goa, a month later X never arrives, there is no message from him, he has just vanished, I wait for him, he never arrives so I search for him, the rest of the book is then spent searching for clues and trying to find X, the climax is, after months of searching, following a painstaking trail, I find X, alive (or dead?)
Now, my problem is that I can't decide where X actually goes, maybe he could join a cult or a religious group, maybe he commits a crime and goes on the run, maybe his girlfriend is mixed up in something. I can't decide, all suggestions are welcome, diversions, fantasies, beauty and disgust, whatever you have , however vague or tenuous , tell me, get my juices flowing.

How far have you gotten in writing the book?

When I sat down to write notes for another short story, I discovered there was much more that had to be discovered and many more characters to be created. It turned into a trilogy! What I am trying to say is that if you write what you already know is your story, the rest may just jump out at you as if you are digging things up. Let them come to you naturally as the story unfolds on paper (or in your computer).

I would think that you have two main characters, "X" and "I" so don't be too hasty in killing X off, if you decide he has to die. Remember, heroes dies slowly, but must first establish their heroism. An antagonist however can make the reader want him dead and it is exciting when the antagonist twists the plot into making him the hero in the end. It takes talent to make a reader hate the hero and love the villain.

How much do you know about India? The culture, the people, the customs, the geology, etc? The plot must be credible even if you endulge into fantasy and adventure. No matter how much espionage is written into books and movies, it seems to be an inner secret desire of most to be on the edge of danger thwarting the evil against good.

good luck with your book. Keep us posted on how it is coming along.

Hey, I've got about about 20000 words,
X is a friend of I but they have a long and convoluted relationship, X as become a much less likable character as the friendship develops, one of my ideas was that the two friends have a blazing row before going their separate ways, as X may very well go awol of his own volition this would explain why he fails to contact I. I think you are right with regards to the plot unfolding naturally, I already have several pieces, X becomes involved with a drug smuggler in Goa, something goes wrong and X goes on the run. I am also toying with the idea of X having some contact with terrorists, X has a large inheritance from his fathers death and could be involved with funding. Something that does happen is that he will lose all his money at some point, maybe the girl rips him off, or terrorists. X will eventually end up in Bangkok but I haven't decided how or why?
With regards to my knowledge of India, I spent six months travelling there and I am going to lift locations, characters and stories directly from my experiences (albeit embroidered a bit).
If you are really interested I can post a lot more stuff but this message is already quite long.
