I chose my Birth of Venus avatar because it was the first of the year and rebirth seemed like a good theme. I also like the whole Goddess of Love thing. Very Happy

LibertyD: I chose it, not because of my heritage, but because of my interest in America before so much of it was overrun and paved over. Yes, the Gilcrease is a treasure!

LibertyD- When I was a kid in school, I always doodled eyes. Large, bright, lustrous eyes. My eyes are greenish, but not as green as the avatar. (I wish).

As a younger person, I had huge eyes, & to this day, I still wear quite a bit of eye makeup.

Eyes are the first thing that I look at when I meet a person. I think that you can tell a lot about someone by their eyes, and how they interact with yours. What can I say? I have a thing for eyes

Phoenix -- I envy people with huge eyes (how lucky you are)! I agree that you can tell a lot about people by their eyes. Mine are slightly hooded, so lots of makeup is out of the question for me, although I did try as a teen-ager, especially after looking at those cool Christian Dior eye make-up ads back in the 80's.

mac11 -- you mean you didn't choose yours simply because it was Botticelli, and one of the most beautiful things ever painted?! I was going to choose that one until I found out you'd already taken it. If you ever tire of it, I'm next! Meanwhile, the scarlet rose will have to do. I chose that one because it closely resembles a certain rose in my garden, and because I needed to clear up confusion over my gender in "Lola's Salon."

Side note: I originally signed in as "Visitor," just checking out the site, thinking that if I decided to stay I would change it later. Then I found out I couldn't change it...(sigh)...and by that time, Lola & others had decided I should be called "Viz." I can live with that.

Viz, I love Mac's avatar too, and it would be great for you when she's finished! I do like your rose, though.

Viz, you're right - the fact that it's Botticelli had a lot to do with my choosing her!

I really wanted the Delphic Sibyl from the Sistine Chapel, but never found a version that I liked. I'll search again this morning. I'd be happy to let you be Venus! Very Happy

This is my second avatar- my first being the green alien news anchor from Futurama. Both struck a chord with me- monsters as well as funny. I guess it is a reflection on me that I find life to be both frightening and humorous at the same time?

mac!! Wow! Really?! I can't believe you'd do that for me! This is great! I've asked jespah to change my name to "Eva," and I DO want to use the Botticelli Venus.

I love the Sibyl, too. What great symbolism for an avatar. Always loved that character.

I saw both of these artworks in person three years ago when we visited Italy. Spent about an hour in front of the "Birth of Venus," just staring open-mouthed. It's in an entire room full of Botticellis at the Uffizi. Right next to the "Primavera." I got so dizzy I thought I was going to pass out.

The Sistine Chapel was pretty funny. Crammed full of people, SRO, and about every five minutes the guards would start screaming, "Silencio!" over and over again at the top of their lungs. The Sibyl looked down, somewhat dismayed.

Um, where do I find the Botticelli Venus avatar? Is it in the gallery?

Okay, I think I've got everything updated now. I flipped the image so it would face the text (I guess the editor in me is coming out.) Also, I think it gives it a little different feel. Thanks, mac11!
