I looked, but I didn't see a thread for this. I've got this stuff coming into my bulk mail, pretty much every day - and it's really interesting, if not a little annoying sometimes. I show it to all my friends - I call it the "Bulk thread". Anyway, it's funny how since I've been reading it - I can recognize two very distinct voices. When I open it and the quotes are tacked onto some kind of sexual enhancement ad - the messages are either vaguely threatening, or "malevolent" is a good word used in the follwing quote. These two are examples:
1) "she ?- Mrs R.
She would have lain awake at night, looking up at the ceiling of her
bedroom, listening to the high-country whine of the wind, imagining the
people who must be thinking of her with either dislike or outright
malevolence ?- all the world's Roydmans ?- people who might, any of them, at
any time, take a notion to call her on the telephone and scream: You did
it, Annie!
And even supposing he could make it out to the road, what were his
chances of flagging down a car?"
2) "Was that what those empty handcuffs meant?
She had washed the blood off the mower but forgotten the blade
underneath ?- the whole blade housing, for that matter.
The body of the unfortunate Miss Evelyn-Hyde had been exhumed, of
course, and as Geoffrey Alliburton drew Mary to a halt in front of the gate
leading into Little Dunthorpe's C of E churchyard, Mrs."
And then there are the ones that come tacked onto the end of some stock offering or investment opportunity that are more cryptic and kind of round-about, but contain almost no hint of malevolence or implied threat or violence, like this (one of my favorites so far):
"We can only pray now, and hope, morning, noon and night, that no evil will befall her.
Within her was a chemism of dreams which somehowcounteracted all they had to say.
Even Juliahardly gathered the full import of it. There were others, as he knew, who wouldspeak for him.
Evidently, like himself, she didnt believe so much in it, either. His nose was so long and thin, his eyes so sharp, his lips thin, and chin pointed.
That young fella there is waiting to see you, he explained. With Asa then she retired quite precipitately to a small room backof the mission hall.
Then, Now, what do yousuppose could have caused her to do that?
It was only another something which hinted that things werenot right here.
To be able to talk to a girl after the mannerand with the sang-froid of some of these gallants! Presently the parents came out, and then Mrs.
His nose was so long and thin, his eyes so sharp, his lips thin, and chin pointed.
That notetold something, and yet his mother had not let him see it. It was only another something which hinted that things werenot right here. And yet his words were those of a lover who would be true forever. What was the good of it, he askedhimself? Why, that was twenty-eight to forty-twodollars a week!
He approached the youth at the smalldesk: Do you know where I will find Mr. He just came in this morning with fourteentrunks and four servants.
There were the long bright streets of a morning andafternoon after school or of an evening. Look sharp, cause if you dont get nobags, you dont get no tips, see.
But to acquire this art, as he was now informed, required time andthe friendly help of an expert. I should thinkthat would be as good as helping about a soda fountain, any day.
But if youd like to be a bell-boy, I can tell you where you might get a place. If any one asks where she is, continued Mrs.
Den, if deyre any good, deyll hand you a tip.
Although, as Clyde had come to know, it could be done eventually,of course.
There would be just another mission there, the same asthis one. Could he bring areference from where he now was? And with that Clyde himself had been in mentalagreement before he spoke. Her biggish mouth was now set in a firm, straight line.
Our hearts must be kept open, softand tender.
And that inaddition to the fifteen dollars a month and board. "
I've put them in quotes, because I know I didn't write them. Someone did though, although I also recognize that some of what's written here is taken from literature that's already been published.
I enjoy reading the ones attached to the stock offerings. I find them kind of fascinating, to the point that I'm almost tempted to invest in whatever stock it comes attached to- someone has interesting writing ability or at the very least good taste in literature. That says something....
The first type I mentioned (the ones that come on the end of the sexual enhancement aids) are just tiresome and boring.
Anyone else get any of this stuff? I mean, I've researched it and I know that when you give your e-mail address to a forum to receive notification of replies, it's supposed to be kept secure - but from all that I've read, that's really pretty easy to get around.
Feel free to add interesting bulk quotes of your own - I'll keep posting them as I get them.
