This is a long shot, but does anyone know where I can get a copy of
"Sorceress" with Tchéky Karyo. The screenplay was written by a professional Medieval scholar,Pamela Berger of Boston College, and was shot in both French and English versions. It's based on a genuine medieval text by the 13th-century Dominican, Etienne de Bourbon, about the cult of St. Guinefort near Lyons in France. The story focuses accurately on early 13th century historical issues: the survival of "folk" culture; the role of women; the beginnings of the Dominican order; the use of profit-based farming techniques (in this case carp ponds) by local nobilities.
I know it's on VHS, but no longer distributed in the US. I've checked around the web, but no luck. I was told it is still available in England and France. I'm looking for the English version or the French with subtitles. I'm williing to take the French version, but only if it comes with a frenchman who will sit next to me on the couch and translate for me.
Have you tried looking on Amazon and Amazon UK?
I've searched Amazon US, Ebay, Half.com, various used video sites and general Dogpile and Google searches. I haven't tried Amazon UK because I thought that would appear in my Amazon searches, I'll give it a separate try.
Have you tried contacting Boston College?
I don't think so, but maybe they ummmm.... I dunno. Maybe they can tell you how to find it.
Actually littlek, it's not a totally off base suggestion. The movie is often used in medieval history classes because it's considered an accurate portrait of the period.
I snuck another post in there, Greenwitch..... look up.
Good find littlek, I'd better check with my herb group if they want to splurge with $35 bucks. We are going to show it as a fund raiser. I'm off to email...
ONly one on the net - don't take too long. <or I might buy it, it looks cool>
I'll be happy to loan it you when we are finished. I can't find where it says it's in English or with subtitltes.
Oh..... could be problematic.
No go. PriceGrabber links me to Amazon for the purchase and when I get to Amazon they say it's not available. Good try milady.
It's OK, I like a good holy grail now and then (offer to borrow still stands when I find it).
