Revvel paced himself as a fierce storm blew over the woods with a chilling wind that cut to the bone. It was late autumn, the time of rot and death. The air slowly became cold and the sky beckoned death with its pale moon that poked through the clouds in a frightening way.
His thick brown hair was tangled and thrown about by the passing winds which slowly dried his deep blue eyes. His light peach colored skin was somewhat red due to the passing cold, while the rest of him was covered in heavy clothing to withstand the slowly dropping temperatures. He preoccupied
himself with a song he had heard earlier...
"I don't feel for love for you don't cry..." The song passed through his head over and over, slowly leaving its imprint in his mind. A day earlier he had stopped at an inn which was called "The Waning Moon Inn."
He stayed the night and found the reason for the rather saddening name. Two women performed in late afternoon on a small wooden stage set up outback of the tavern. Both of them wore dark black clothing and their skin was a soft pale white. He heard them singing a sad slow song about a man who fell in love with a maiden but the maiden did not love him in return which drove him mad. He listened to the song with its strange style of music that was almost hypnotizing. The owner of the tavern believed the two to live far out in the wilderness, far from the cities. Given the two women's complexion, he hinted to Revvel they were vampires. Even so, he paid them to perform at the tavern sometimes due to there amazing talents.
Revvel had the song drifting through his head for a day now with its melody slowly playing its magical tune.
The storm slowly lifted letting the moons glowing light pass down onto the treetops illuminating the path that Revvel walked along. Removing his hood he looked to the sky and stopped for a moment to study the intricate workings of the clouds.
"Go to the abbey and find Sister Adrie..." Revvel remembered the Raspy voice that gave him his new mission. He didn't know the man but the man surely knew him since he knew well enough that Revvel had been a small time mercenary for that last few years. "...tell her a brother has a request."
That was it, no other orders. He was to be paid twenty gold pieces once he arrived at the Abbey and eighty gold pieces after he completed his work. Needing the gold Revvel took the job without thinking.
Slowly making his way down the moonlit path he heard the light sound of singing ahead. So familiar, then he realized it was the two women singing at the inn. He quickly approached to see the two in their pitch black clothing with their pale white skin showing brightly. They had their hoods down this time revealing white hair that was neatly folded up and tied.
The sudden site of the two stopped Revvels thought leaving his mind wandering closer to them. He drifted for what seemed like a long passing of time when only a few mere seconds passed by. Collecting himself Revvel questioned if the two had realized he had seen them, stepping back off the path Revvel pressed his back against the nearest tree and peered around to see the two heading away still singing. It was a different song but still with a equally hypnotizing tune which could captivate it's listener easily.
Moving back onto the path he kept his distance well away from the two women but close enough to keep their movements in sight. After following them for around eight miles the sun was resting on the horizon and the forest slowly grew dark. The shadows of the trees hung over the path with tenacious feelings of want and fear. Revvel kept close to the two as the path slowly blended with the surrounding forests impeding shadows.
It was dark now and Revvel had not questioned yet why it was he felt compelled to follow the two, the singing
it lured him somehow; the singing still pierced the dark shadows with crystal clarity keeping the hairs on the back of his neck on end even as beads of sweat crept down over the tingling hairs.
Following the two they came to an abrupt stop and the surrounding forest was no longer filled with the mesmerizing singing. Revvel watched closely, keeping his eyes focused on them as their silhouettes stood with statues pause. He blinked as the salt in a bead of sweat dripped into his eye and the silhouettes has had disappeared. He stepped back and looked around himself to see if they had ran off, to see if they were only toying with him this entire time; but nothing, not even the simplest crack of a stick or the crunch of a dead leaf.
"You are following, are you not, strange wanderer?" A sweet voice whispered into Revvel's ear. He spun to see nothing even though the soft flow of air from the girl's mouth had brushed across the side of his head. "Do you wish to listen to our music?" The voice whispered again and Revvel turned to once again see nothing.
"Where are you?" He asked keeping an eye out for a flash of the pale white skin in the darkness.
"We are but simple people, as you are. We make a living in our talents as you seem to be. Although we may not be considered the same as others would have it seen." The other girl's voice whispered into his ear. This time he felt the soft touch of lips on his cheek as he spun to see nothing in the darkness. "But you did not answer our question
"
"
why were you following us?" The other girl asked again. The voices slowly twisted around him but no sign of movement ?'nor a sight of them could be seen or heard.
"I guess
" The question seemed to stop Revvel, he didn't quite know why he followed them, was it out of curiosity or was it the beautiful song they had sung? He did not have an answer but to say that he was curious, even though the answer was surely untruthful. "
I was curious." He decided to answer regretting the answer afterwards.
"Curiosity was it? You do know curiosity is what killed the cat." One of the girls lightly laughed. "Do you know it was curiosity or is that the only answer you could create?"
Revvel thought of the question she had come back at him with. He wasn't sure what to say but the singing. Remaining silent the two girls whispered indistinctly to each other. "It was because of the song, the music that you sang
"
"You have followed us because of song? The power of song being powerful enough to lure what seemed to be a simple minded man for hours on end
"
"
or was it the music that caused the curiosity that you experienced?"
Revvel had no answer but to simply stand foolish in the middle of a dark forest. Thinking on his actions he now regretted following the two. Even though he would've followed them for a time he could've gone on his set path to his destination, but this seemed more important somehow in his mind.
"Do you know who and what we are?" One of the voices asked as slipping past his ears.
"I don't know who you are, but I do know that your vampires." Revvel stopped himself realizing what he said. Stupid answer, really stupid god damned answer, he gripped his fist thinking he had offended them but instead he heard them laughing quietly.
"Ah yes, the tavern owner told you didn't he?" One of them questioned. "Yes, it is true, we are spawn of the night and are disgraces upon humanity. Kill us now and rid the world of us." Both of them appeared in front of him bowing, both with soft smiles on their thin red lips.
"I don't wish to kill you; I don't wish to hurt either of you, I just
"
"
you were curious of course. Curiosity is simply a part of the human mind, as is part of ours." They both stood up looking him in the eyes with their own dark eyes. "You are not one who is foolish and draws conclusions with no evidence. Not all vampires are horrid spawns of the night who prey on human for feeding. Yes, we have killed before, we cannot lie
"
"
but we have never done it without being sanctioned by the host first. We will find a hunter lost and dieing in the woods or a forester who has hurt himself from a fallen tree."
"I understand, but why are you telling me this?" Revvel asked looking at their red lips which stood out when juxtaposed to their pale skin.
"You were drawn by our music and only few are drawn by it. These are the ones who are worthy of the gift of night."
"For they can hear something within our voices that no other can hear, and those who hear, are worth of the gift of the night." The two girls looked at eachother in and unison spoke, "We are the Sesselin Sisters, we are pleased to make your acquaintance."
