You are, mindonfire, at the very least, an interesting specimen.

And, at the most, an interesting specimen.

I think in these instances "might" may be interpreted as "may" as in "it is a possibility, but not a certainty". This would fit the criteria of salvation through Christ as an individual choice. It is not mandated or assumed. It is an open possibility which one may or may not choose to accept for his or her own life.

yea, this is a big load. This could just be a form of speaking instead of something to be taken that way.

It's definitely a form of speaking or rather writing (as these are verses from the Bible), so it's open to anyone's interpretation. Why do you think mine's a "big load" - or did you mean the actual verses or the whole concept of Christ as a savior in general?

Is there a point that Mindonfire is trying to make?

The only problem is if you look at those verses they are talking to people who have already chosen. In other words Believers.

You in all your wisdom cannot figure out the point oh Proud one.

Those verses would be comforting to someone who already believed as reinforcement of why they might benefit from believing, but at the same time, they'd be useful in convincing an unbeliever that he or she would benefit from believing.

All of those verses are from a Gospel (John) or from one of Paul's epistles (Galatians)- they were preaching to try to strengthen the faith of believers or to try to convert unbelievers- so it's directed at anyone who was there to hear it (or read it) for whatever reason-to try to direct their choice. That's how I read it anyway.

We want to make something clear. That is a great list, but all of those "mights" are not probabilities or possibilites. For example;


Col 1:11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;


Eph 1:21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:

Eph 3:16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;

"And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?" (1Peter 4:18)

Or, in a modern translation:

"And if the righteous [man] is being saved with difficulty, where will the ungodly [man] and the sinner make a showing?"

See now Neologist - that's where I get all confused. Because on one hand, it's not supposed to be about "good works" (or behavior) and then on the other hand you have verses like that one in Peter that infer that it is somehow more difficult for a sinner to achieve salvation than someone who at least appears to be more righteous. (I really hate that word).

I think those type of verses almost imply that a judgemental attitude among Christians is implicit and in fact, advocated. Who's to judge who is and what isn't righteous? I think those who pass judgement on others are perhaps committing the worst sin because they're placing themselves in God's role. And that "righteous" judgemental attitude is what turns so many people off to Christianity. I know it's what turned me off to organized Christianity - even though I was practically born and brought up in the church.

Luckily I know a lot of Christians who practice a more empathetic and understanding humanistic form of Christianity so my view is not totally jaded. And I know what I've read about who Jesus was and what he believed and taught so I don't buy into that whole Christian right gig as anything related to what Jesus taught or who he was.
