Hi
This is my first post, so be gentle!
Basically this is the idea for my novel:
Young boy has got a gift for English, reads magazines. Freelances for a small magazine, struggles to get regular spots due to age and everyone else being more experienced than him. Almost gives up, but fights on and manages to land a job on the same magazine he bought years ago, works his way up. Manages to get the job of Editor and on that same day he's promoted he's involved in a road traffic accident. He dies realising his dream - how many people die not realising their dream? In the end doens't realise how lucky he is.
What do we think guys? It's kind of Autobiographical, as I am a freelance writer for weekly PC magazine and would one day love to be the Editor on the magazine.
Cheers,
Lee
Summaries are easy. People who can summarize write the teaser, condensed version of the novel's plot on the flaps of the book jacket.
The Classic Summary: Boy meets Girl. Boy loses Girl. Boy wins Girl.
Summaries are easy.
Now, can you actually write the novel?
Yes, but I wasn't asking whether or not I could write it. I was asking whether the brief summary could be turned into a half-decent novel...
We don't know...can you?
Stories tend to take a life of their own. You start out with good intentions and suddenly you realize that your story has gone in a completely different direction.
A good summary doesn't mean a good story.
Write it and see.

Are you insinuating that we aren't serious?
I am very serious.
Hmm....well, it sounds interesting. Sounds almost similiar to the start of "Five People You Meet In Heaven" but it has some differances and I can imagine you'll get a few readers from it.
Plus, writing anything is a good way to get your skills up.
Lee, I spent a lot of years with a fellow who wrote treatments and screenplays, and perfected.... almost, the Pitch.
from that point of view, would it make a grabber, short story, novel, screenplay? No, you lost me in it.
On the other hand, I am not such a screenplay type person, and I tend to revel in the anecdotal compilation squished into book form.... and this is anathema to box office.
Still, your plot points don't make me want to flip a page, even in the non Hollywood format.
I don't mean to be crushing - you may have a story there. You need to figure out how to tell it, even in very short form.
Not that I like Hollywood and screenplay writing, let me just adjust my own marital noose, but you could probably learn from screenplaywriting sites re the PITCH.
Yes. Definately a plot that will spawn some wonderful writing. Now go. Do it. Just think about it, 10 people can sit at their easel and paint a single model. There will be 7 canvases in the end. Three people will have dropped out of the class. There will be 5 mediocre paintings of a misshapen nude in various colors. There will be 2 good paintings of a recognizable human figure. One will have the spark that makes you want to look at it again and again. That will be you.
