Task Bar and Start Menu Disappear (HJT log)

Reply Mon 14 Aug, 2006 07:29 pm
over the weekend my WinXP began acting up, loosing the task bar and start menu, printer no longer installed ...... Evil or Very Mad

I went back into the properties and made sure the task bar was locked and on top. It stayed up while I was working; but the next day - GONE.

I uninstalled/reinstalled my printer - same story worked then - GONE.

I am attaching my HiJack file in hopes that one of you can spot the dirty little bugger doing this to me.

Thanks in advance!

This may all be a bit late but, if not, here goes.

There's not much dreadfully wrong with your HJT log. A few minor issues but nothing I can see that would cause the problem you describe.

What I suggest is that you completely uninstall the printer then see how you get on. If your taskbar etc. are all working OK for a day or two then reinstall the printer. If it all goes haywire again you know your culprit.

Whatever happens please rescan with HJT and post a new log. Let us know what happens.

By the way is this a work computer? If so do you have an IT person to help you?

Work Computer?
Why would you think I talking about my work PC?

I tried previously to uninstall the printer, but I got a MS error that the installer was not working or some stupid message. After my printer went haywire, my speakers went and then Microsoft updates, AVG Free, Spybot, Ad-Aware and PC Mechanic were not able to get any updates. My firewall kept getting turned off too.

I was able to fix things by unpluging all my periphial equipment and then went to Grisoft and uninstalled AVG Free from there, then downloaded it again and BINGO all spyware programs updated themselves and microsoft did it's updates. I then reconnected all my periphials and all was well. So I'm thinking AVG Free had some kind of problem that was effecting my system.

This was very traumatic for me and I was afraid I was going to loose all my genealogy, photos, files, etc. So I bought an external 150GB hard drive and moved everything over there. The only thing that resides on my C: is programs. I feel safer now.

Thanks for your reply.

Hi again

Work PC ... it's just that a couple of entries in your log suggested to me it might be an office computer but not for certain.

Anyway, glad to hear all is well now.

In addition to good firewall and antivirus protection there are other free programs you should install to help keep your computer free of malware. This handy little guide lists them for you and gives the links for the download sources ...
