After I stopped I looked in my rear view mirror and I saw a huge semi going way too fast. I knew it wouldn't be able to stop.
Okay, so what happened next?
I very quickly looked to my left (considered jumping out of the car) but knew there was no time.

no, because the shoulder was too small and there was a concrete barrier there.
So, what did I do?

There were loud noises, ripping metal, I was being pushed forward and hit the car in front of me.

people jumped out of their cars, truck driver came running over in tears, nice people asking if I was hurt in anyway. This was before cell phones.

Okay, lets skip ahead and explain why they made me sue them?
because I only wanted my car fixed and the trucking company's insurance refused.

So, then what?
I went to an attorney, gave him everything I had that was in writing (police and fire reports), told him everything and all I wanted was my car fixed.
Did I ever speak to the truck driver?
yes, I called him and told him everything and thanked him
Why would I thank him for hitting me?
I didn't, I thanked him for saving me
What? He hit me. He didn't save me.
yes, he hit me. He hit me with a fully loaded double semi (around 45 ft long). He saved me by not hitting me square in the rear. He purposely jack knifed the truck so the bed of his semi and the load was sideways when he hit me otherwise I would have been flat as a pancake.
Did I win the lawsuit?
yes, the thing was settled out of court in 3 months
Was I happy about it?
I was happy to get my car fixed, I was not happy about feeling forced to sue someone over it.
Did it end up costing the trucking company more money then if they would have just paid to have your car fixed?
yes, a lot more
So, I made money from the lawsuit?
yes and no

because there was a bear that needed a home in a zoo (I think it was CA) and the zoo didn't have the money to pay for the habitat and upkeep and they were considering putting the bear to sleep so I sent them the money. They sent me a letter back later to let me know they raised enough money to give the bear a home.
Did that make me feel good?
yes, I helped save a bear with the money that the stupid insurance company had to pay over and above the cost of fixing my car.
All I wanted was my car fixed.
