How Much Does a Tutor Make?

Reply Tue 8 Aug, 2006 11:30 am
I've been thinking of picking up a little money on the side by moonlighting as a tutor. How much would it be conventional for me to charge for these subjects?

Algebra
Calculus
College Freshman Physics

My qualification is a BS and MS in Physics. I would not be associated with any agency. I'd be grateful if anyone has an idea of the going rate.

A good friend of mine did tutoring for several years. He has a Masters in Engineering and a Masters in Math. He got about $60 per hour for regular high school students and $200 per hour for GMAT and SAT tutoring.

I think it depends on where your tutoring and what your are tutoring on. In college, you could get a tutor for like $25 or something, but they were grad students and upper classmen. I'd imagine a graduate could get more.

Found this (have no idea what they are all about but it sounded good)
NTA

And this one....(again, no clue if this is local or national) Tutor Nation

But maybe they will have some resources for you.

Thanks. They look encouraging. I'm recently married and I need a cash transfusion. It's encouraging to see that some of the people list the same sort of qualifications as I have.

Thanks. I do suspect that graduates can command a higher rate than students, but even $25 an hour is nothing to sneeze at. Although I'd prefer to be totally independent, it's probably worthwhile to at least look at a few tutoring association Web sites. There may be some such organizations that are not very invasive.
