soz : yes , thanks , mrs h is feeling much better again - probably some low level virus . there were several people at the pool that were laid low .

there is usually a large container with soup-stock in the basement-freezer ; so all it takes is some reheating , perhaps some fresh veggies , matzo balls if time allows - a nice montreal bagel will do in a pinch - and we have a quick lunch ready .

(sending some chicken-soup with matzoballs across the wires ! Smile )

funny story about matzoball soup :
when ehbeth went to waterloo u she brought 'mark' along .
he was a (jewish) student from one of her classes .
mrs h was a bit frazzled - what could she possibly serve him ?
so matzoball soup was prepared .
eh and mark arrived .
"would you like some matzo ball soup , mark ?"
a slight frown on mark's face .
the soup was served , he sniffed , he dug in ... did he ever !
"well , i like this matzoball soup ; when my mother makes matzoballs ,
they are like hockey-pucks ! "
for breakfast mark asked for crisply fried bacon Very Happy Shocked !
(must have been kosher bacon Laughing )

It's very easy to make matzoh balls that are like lead.

Mix in too much egg, too much water, work them too much with your hands (thereby making gluten), toss them into soup that's not quite boiling and you have the makings of leaden matzoh balls.

matzoballs : i stick with the ones i know Very Happy .
btw we had our first taste of matzoball soup at jack dempsey's restaurant in NYC sometime in the seventies - and i've been a good friend of that soup ever since . jack dempsey would sit at the back of the restaurant with his cronies and sign postcards for his customers "best of luck ! jack dempsey " . i still have the postcard and a big fold-out menu - a full dinner started at $4.95 !

a head's up for those of us in the greater Bahstin area, courtesy of the (STUPID) weather channel --

...SNOW LATE TONIGHT COULD SLOW THE FRIDAY MORNING COMMUTE AND THEN STRONG NORTHWEST WINDS SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING SHOULD CAUSE SCATTERED POWER OUTAGES... LOW PRESSURE JUST NOW FORMING OFF THE SOUTHEAST COAST OF THE UNITED STATES WILL EXPLOSIVELY DEEPEN AS IT CROSSES CAPE COD FRIDAY MORNING AND BRING WITH IT A 6 HOUR BURST OF BRIEFLY HEAVY PRECIPITATION. WIDESPREAD 1 TO POSSIBLY 3 INCH SNOWFALL IS EXPECTED ACROSS NORTHERN CONNECTICUT...WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS AND SOUTHWEST NEW HAMPSHIRE. THERE IS A CHANCE THAT SNOW FALL WILL EXCEED 3 INCHES FROM THE MERRIMACK VALLEY THROUGH BOSTONS DISTANT WESTERN SUBURBS INTO WORCESTER AND ALONG THE RHODE ISLAND CONNECTICUT BORDER. IN BOSTON...MAINLY RAIN IS EXPECTED TONIGHT...HOWEVER...THERE COULD BE A BRIEF BURST OF HEAVY SNOW BEFORE THE PRECIPITATION ENDS EARLY FRIDAY MORNING. THIS COULD MAKE ROADS VERY SLIPPERY. POLAR COLD WILL ARRIVE SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING ON STRONG NORTHWEST WINDS GUSTING TO AT LEAST 45 MPH WITH A CHANCE OF ISOLATED 60 MPH GUSTS OVER EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS AND SOUTH CENTRAL NEW HAMPSHIRE. THIS WOULD RESULT IN SCATTERED POWER OUTAGES. FINALLY...WIND CHILLS SUNDAY MORNING ARE AGAIN EXPECTED TO DIP TO BETWEEN ZERO AND 15 BELOW. THOSE TRAVELING THE INTERIOR OF SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND FRIDAY MORNING SHOULD PLAN FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF TRAVEL DELAYS. HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES WILL HAVE A DIFFICULT TIME OF IT SATURDAY AFTERNOON IN MUCH OF SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND AND A FEW MORE TREE LIMBS MAY BE BROKEN BY STRONG GUSTY NORTHWEST WINDS.

edited to include this week's stupidity --
...DANGEROUSLY COLD WIND CHILLS ARE EXPECTED ACROSS SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND LATE THURSDAY NIGHT (1/25/07) AND FRIDAY MORNING... A BITTER COLD AIRMASS...THE COLDEST OF THE SEASON...WILL POUR INTO SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND THURSDAY NIGHT AND FRIDAY ON GUSTY NORTHWEST WINDS. WIND CHILLS WILL DROP TO 15 TO 25 BELOW ZERO LATE THURSDAY NIGHT AND FRIDAY MORNING ACROSS THE INTERIOR... AND 10 TO 15 BELOW ZERO ALONG THE SOUTH COAST. ACTUAL AIR TEMPERATURES WILL NOT GET OUT OF THE SINGLE NUMBERS ON FRIDAY ACROSS THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS...WITH TEMPERATURES STRUGGLING INTO THE LOWER TEENS IN HARTFORD...PROVIDENCE AND BOSTON. WIND CHILL ADVISORIES WILL LIKELY BE NEEDED FOR A LARGE PORTION OF SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND LATE THURSDAY NIGHT INTO FRIDAY. IF YOU PLAN ON BEING OUTDOORS ON FRIDAY...PLAN FOR BITTER COLD CONDITIONS AND DRESS APPROPRIATELY.

at this time i feel compelled to once again say

Sigh.... seems like just a few weeks ago we were getting weather in the 40s and mild frosts at night (er, it WAS just a few weeks ago).

Tomorrow's forcast is 94 degrees, hot and hazy.

a mockingbird, no doubt frazzled by the sultry weather, has been chirping away for the past hour or so...

reg, yes! there's one in my neighborhood that's probably the same bird every year, comes every summer, hangs out in one tree, shifts the tree every year, but then is consistently there for the season, and cranks up around midnight. I thought for a long time I was imagining it, I mean what kind of nutball bird sings all night? But it keeps doing it every summer. And it keeps my kind of hours--the night is the best part of the day. Cambridge, just north of Harvard.

The lady mockingbirds they're trying to impress are at home, their feathers in curlers, a pore clarifying mud mask on their beaks, wrapped up in little birdie bathrobes and are telling them to keep the racket down. Squirrels are throwing little squirrel shoes, complaining that they just got the kids to sleep, couldja turn it down already?

Okay, well maybe the animal village is all in my head.
